Single-shot TOZ-1 rifle was designed in 1927 by V. Selivanov and Ya. Kanevsky. TOZ-1s were used in late 1920s - early 1930s for basic shooting training, until replaced with improved TOZ-7 and TOZ-8 rifles.

Single shot TOZ-8 was designed in 1932. It was the main basic shooting training rifle in USSR in 1930s. TOZ-8 became a base for several improved rifles: 5-shot TOZ-9, and single shot TOZ-12 and TOZ-16.

TOZ-17/18
TOZ-17 is a 5-shot .22 caliber rifle, designed in late 1950s and based on single shot TOZ-16. TOZ-18 is a version of TOZ-17, fitted with sniper scope. Generally both models are the same rifle.
