El Dorado is a 1966 Western that is considered the second film in Howard Hawks' "trilogy" of films that featured John Wayne in a story of a sheriff who must defend his office against an aggressive outlaw element in the town. The other two films are 1959's Rio Bravo and 1970's Rio Lobo. In this film, John Wayne stars as Cole Thornton, a gunfighter who helps an old friend protect a group of ranchers from a rival who had previously hired Colt. The film's cast includes James Caan, Ed Asner, and Robert Mitchum, whose son Christopher Mitchum would later co-star with Wayne in Rio Lobo and Big Jake.
The following weapons were used in the film El Dorado:
Revolvers
Colt Single Action Army "Quick Draw"
The Colt SAA "Quick-Draw" is used by numerous characters throughout the movie. Most notably Cole Thornton (John Wayne), Sheriff Harrah (Robert Mitchum) and Bart Jason (Ed Asner).
Shotguns
Cut-down Double Barrel 12 Gauge
When Alan Bourdillion Traherne aka "Mississippi" (James Caan) proves to more adept with a knife than a handgun Thornton (John Wayne) gets him a cut down double barreled 12 gauge.
Rifles
Winchester Model 1892
Both Cole Thorton (John Wayne) and Sheriff Harrah (Robert Mitchum) use the Winchester Model 1892 Saddle-ring Carbine with a large loop lever. Joey MacDonald (Michele Carey) also uses the 1892 throughout the movie as her weapon of choice.
Colt Model 1855 Carbine
Sheriff Harran's deputy Bull Harris (Arthur Hunnicutt) uses the Colt Model 1855 Carbine.
Remington-Keene Repeating Rifle
The Remington-Keene Repeating Rifle makes a rare movie appearance in the hands of Mrs. MacDonald (Diane Strom). The version she is carrying appears to be the Remington-Keene Deluxe Sporter based on the design of the rifle stock and the long exposed barrel.
