Walther P99AS (Anti Stress) - .40 S&W. Note the slightly longer and non-scalloped front of the .40 model's slide. The "AS" model Walther P99 introduces an 'Anti Stress' mode in the trigger. It is a traditional Double Action shooter with an 'anti stress' bar, designed to inhibit 'accidental firing' under stress conditions. If a round is chambered but the striker is decocked, the first trigger pull will be a long and heavy (~11 lbs) DA mode pull. All following shots will be in SA mode, which requires significantly less trigger travel (~1/3 - 1/2 as much) and is of a much lighter weight (~5 lbs). The "Anti-Stress" mode is obtained by cocking the striker either by manually cycling the slide or by pulling it back ~3/8" without ejecting the chambered round. At this point the trigger will be in "AS" mode and will have the long trigger travel of the normal DA mode (with the ability to be 'staged' at the normal SA position if desired), but the light trigger weight of the SA mode. This allows for a light and accurate first shot with a greatly reduced risk of a stress induced accidental discharge that is more likely with the abbreviated SA trigger pull. The AS is generally the most popular trigger type for the P99 for these reasons. All pre-2004 P99s are of the "AS" type (although not designated as such) unless otherwise indicated.
