The L98A1 GP Rifle is used to train the Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps for basic weapon handling and shooting skills, and the rifle is fired as a manually operated, straight pull magazine repeater rifle. The correct term is Rifle, 5.56mm, Cadet GP L98A1.

The L98A2 is a semi-automatic revamp of L85A1's and L98A1's to be issued to all Cadet Forces between 2009-2010.
