The Haenel MP28/II was designed by Hugo Schmeisser in 1924 and was secretly tested at Kummersdorf by Inspektion fur Waffen und Gerat in 1925. It an improved version of the Bergmann MP18 Submachine Gun. It incorporated the simple box magazine that Schmeisser preferred and a semi-auto and full auto fire control selector. Despite the external similarity, the internal structure of the MP28 is different from the MP18 (hence, apparently, the postscript "II"). The MP28/II was not manufactured by government arsenals because the Treaty of Versailles restricted German manufacture of these weapons, the C.G. Haenel firm of Suhl, Germany transferred production and sale to Pieper in Belgium.
The MP28/II was used by Germany, Belgium, Holland, and South America.
