North and South: Book II North and South Book 2: Love and War , after the title of the original novel) is a 1986 6-part miniseries, the second part of a trilogy adapted from trilogy of novels North and South by John Jakes. It depicts the story of two large families: Mains, planters from South Carolina, and Hazards, industrialists from Pennsylvania, during the Civil War. Main characters are Orry Main (Patrick Swayze ) and George Hazard (James Read ) who became friends while attending the United States Military Academy at West Point. While fighting on opposite sides of the Civil War, they still struggle to maintain their friendship.
