Ernest Borgnine (born Ermes Effron Borgnino January 24, 1917 – July 8, 2012) was an Oscar winning actor (Best Actor for Marty 1955) and was well known to television audiences for his roles as Lt. Cmdr Quentin McHale in the series McHale's Navy and Dominic Santini in the series Airwolf. Borgnine served twice in the United States Navy (1935-1941, 1942-1945). He voluntarily reenlisted in January 1942 after the attack on Pearl Harbor. During WWII he served on the anti-submarine vessel "U.S.S. Silph" and patrolled the Eastern seaboard of the United States. In 2004 Borgnine received the honorary rank of Chief Petty Officer from the U.S. Navy and received the special honor for his naval service and support of the Navy and navy families worldwide.
