Russian assault rifle designed by Sergey Koksharov in 1974 and entered into the Abakan rifle trials, losing out to the AN-94. The AEK-971 is based on previous AK rifles in internal design and layout, but is also equipped with an AO-38 type balanced automatic recoil system to reduce recoil and increase accuracy. The AEK-971 is chambered for the 5.45x39mm round, the AEK-972 is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, and the AEK-973 is chambered in 7.62x39mm.
A-545 and A-762 are two modernized successor variants to the AEK-971 and AEK-973 respectively.
