Assassin of the Tsar (Russian title Tsareubiytsa) is a 1991 Soviet-British movie directed by Karen Shakhnazarov and starring Malcolm McDowell and Oleg Yankovskiy. Timofeyev (Malcolm McDowell) is a patient in a mental hospital; he thinks himself to be a reincarnation of Yakov Yurovsky, Russian revolutionary who was the chief executioner of Emperor Nicholas II and his family in 1918. Dr. Smirnov (Oleg Yankovskiy) spends much time, talking with Timofeyev, who tells him the story of the event of 1918 through the eyes of Yurovsky. Slow but steady Smirnov identifies himself with Tzar Nicholas and dies in the anniversary of the execution.
