His most notable roles are The Bear in An Ordinary Miracle (Obyknovennoye chudo) (1978), Mitya in Don't Leave Your Lovers (S lyubimymi ne rasstavaytes) (1979), Jacob in Formula of Love (Formula lyubvi) (1984), Lancelot in Kill the Dragon (Ubit drakona) (1988) and Nenashev in Genius (1991). In 1991 Abdulov was awarded the title of People's Artist of Russia. He died of lung cancer in 2008, aged 54.
