Harry Ross (Paul Newman), a former Los Angeles policeman and sometime private detective, lives in the guest quarters of Catherine (Susan Sarandon) and Jack Ames (Gene Hackman), former Hollywood superstars. In spite of his misgivings, he agrees to deliver a package for Jack and soon finds himself involved in the twenty-year-old mystery of the disappearance of Catherine's first husband.
