The AEK-919 "Kashtan" ("Chestnut") is a Russian submachine gun developed in the mid-1990s by employees of the Special Design Bureau of the Kovrov Mechanical Plant, based on the Steyr MPi 69/81. The first version of the "Kashtan", indexed AEK-919, was manufactured by an experimental batch, which had time to be tested in a combat situation. According to its results, the weapon was modified: the dimensions and weight were reduced, the reliability of the automation was increased, the buttstock design was changed. This is how the AEK-919K appeared, which, around 1995, was launched into full-fledged mass production at the Kovrov Mechanical Plant (KMZ).
In 1999, the AEK-919K underwent a slight restyling and received a more ergonomic receiver of modern design. In this form, it was produced at Kovrov plant for another 8 years, until in 2007 weapons production was transferred from the Kovrov to the V.A. Degtyarev Plant (ZiD).
