Steyr later released a version of the AUG bullpup rifle that removed the integral scope and installed a rail so that a scope of the  user's choice could be installed.  This allows night vision, red dot, and varying power scopes to be used for different purposes. The AUG A2 is the military version.  In addition to the AUG S/A (the semi auto version imported into the US), there was a 20" barrel railed version called the AUG Special Receiver.  AUG also released a version called the AUG P Special receiver (but with a 16" barrel).

The '''AUG A2''' is an improved version of the Steyr AUG A1, replacing the integral scope with a Picatinny rail, allowing night vision, red dot, and varying power scopes to be installed depending on the situation.

The '''AUG Special Receiver''' is a 20" barreled semi-auto only version of the AUG imported into the United States. Like the AUG A2, it is also fitted with a Picatinny rail. Other semi-auto only AUG imports include the AUG S/A and the AUG P Special Receiver, which has a 16" barrel.

The '''Steyr AUG A3-CQC''' was a prototype development of the A3 first displayed by Steyr at the 2006 Shot Show. It differs in having a railed handguard attached ahead of the receiver. Due to the need to remove this extra railed section in order to strip the rifle for cleaning, it has a quick detach lever mounted on the left side. Due to concerns over the extra cost and weight, along with potential issues with the reliability and consistency of the detachable handguard, the prototypes received little interest and were last seen promoted by Steyr in 2008. In total, only 5 prototypes were made, four with standard 18 inch barrels, and one with a longer heavy marksman barrel and shorter 20 round magazine. Despite the fact that it was never produced by Steyr, its interesting aesthetics alone led to it being used extensively in video games. In 2012, the American company PJA obtained the 5 original prototypes from Steyr and reverse engineered them in order to produce US-made A3-CQC rifles and conversion kits.

The F88 is the Australian Military's variant of the Steyr AUG. It features a barrel with a bayonet lug as standard (unlike Austrian Army and civilian versions), and the standard F88 variant also has an "Automatic Lock Out," sliding tab at the base of the two stage trigger that can be engaged to lock the weapon to semi-auto only. The F88 is outwardly identical to the Irish Army version of the AUG; the main difference between the two is the use of a 1:7 twist barrel on the F88 optimised for the SS109 NATO round rather than the 1:9 twist found in the standard AUG.

The Steyr AUG is a bullpup assault rifle of Austrian origin. The rifle is made of high grade plastics and is in service with the armed forces of Austria, Australia, Ireland, and numerous others. Note that some Steyr AUGs used in movies are possibly Australian made F88 rifles or civilian market AUGs.

The Steyr AUG series of bullpup assault rifles have appeared in the following movies, television series, and video games used by the following actors:

The AUG Special Receiver is a 20" barreled semi-auto only version of the AUG imported into the United States. Like the AUG A2, it is also fitted with a Picatinny rail. Other semi-auto only AUG imports include the AUG S/A and the AUG P Special Receiver, which has a 16" barrel.

Steyr AUG A3-CQC 18-inch barrel with Surefire M900 weaponlight foregrip and EOTech red dot sight - 5.56x45mm.

The Steyr AUG A3-CQC was a prototype development of the A3 first displayed by Steyr at the 2006 Shot Show.

F88S-A1 Austeyr with integral Picantinny rail, 20-inch barrel and ELCAN scope - 5.56x45mm
