Introduced in 1980, the Model 3000 was an effort by Smith & Wesson to compete with Remington, both for more Police business and for sporting arms. It replaced the unpopular [[Smith & Wesson 916 Shotgun Series|Model 916]]. Howa of Japan produced the shotgun for Smith & Wesson and the quality was top level. The Model 3000 competed with the venerable [[Remington 870]] and in many respects surpassed the famous workhorse. It was available in both police and sporting models. The police model could be had with a folding stock/pistol grip or with full-stocked wooden furniture.
