Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (translated as "''When the Cicadas Cry''" and released in the U.S. as "''When They Cry''") is an anime adaptation of a series of sound novels released by 07th Expansion. The majority of the story takes place in June of 1983 in the rural Japanese village of Hinamizawa. Most of the story arcs shown in the anime are in fact alternate versions of the same events, with the arcs starting out in a similar fashion but ending in drastically different yet equally gruesome ways.
