Sidney Poitier (1927–2022) was an American actor who was the first African-American performer to receive the Academy Award for Best Actor (for the film Lilies of the Field). He was also known for his role as Detective Virgil Tibbs in the film In the Heat of the Night and its two sequels. In addition, he appeared in such films as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, To Sir with Love, The Jackal, and Sneakers. He is the father of actress Sydney Tamiia Poitier. He passed away on January 6, 2022, at the age of 94.
