In the Heat of the Night (1967)
In the Heat of the Night is the 1967 crime thriller directed by Norman Jewison and stars Sidney Poitier as Virgil Tibbs, a respected Philadelphia PD homicide detective who happens to be an African-American and who butts heads with Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger), the local police chief of Sparta, Mississippi over the murder of wealthy businessman. Based on a 1965 John Ball novel, the film received Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor (for Steiger) and would produce two film sequels as well as a television series adaptation that starred Carroll O'Connor and Howard Rollins.Poitier would play Virgil Tibbs in two sequels: They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970) and The Organization (1971)

The Smith & Wesson Model 20 is the sidearm carried by most of the officers of the Sparta police department including Chief Bill Gillespie (Rod Steiger) and Sgt. Sam Wood (Warren Oates). A nickel-plated version is held by Ralph Henshaw (Anthony James) and then Det. Virgil Tibbs (Sidney Poitier).
