Sidney Poitier is an American actor who was the first African-American performer to receive an Academy Award for Best Actor (for the film ''Lilies of the Field''). He is also known for his role as Inspector Virgil Tibbs in the film ''[[In the Heat of the Night]]'' and its two sequels.  In addition, he has appeared in such films as ''Guess Who's Coming to Dinner'', ''To Sir with Love'', ''[[The Jackal]]'', and ''[[Sneakers]]''.  He also is the father of actress [[Sydney Tamiia Poitier]].
