The Last Ship is the television series adaptation of the 1988 William Brinkley novel of the same name. The series follows a group of scientists and the crew of the USS Nathan James, a US Navy guided missile destroyer as they discover that they are the last hope for humanity, which has been nearly wiped out by a worldwide pandemic. In their search for the cure, the crew must defend their ship against those who wish to take their findings by force. The series is executive produced by Michael Bay and Jonathan Mostow directed the pilot episode. As with many Michael Bay productions, the series received cooperation from the US Navy and Department of Defense and many sequences were filmed aboard active duty US Navy destroyers in addition to casting active duty US Navy personnel as extras. The cast includes Eric Dane, Rhona Mitra, Jocko Sims, Charles Parnell and Adam Baldwin. The series premiered on June 22, 2014 in the US on the basic cable service TNT and aired for five seasons until 2018.
