Smith & Wesson tried to enter the shotgun market with the 916 series. Unfortunately it had inherent design flaws and was subject to breakage. It wasn't S&W's original design, but derived from designs acquired from the Noble Manufacturing company. It was contract built overseas and was held in low regard by not only police departments but writers for various gun publications. Smith & Wesson built the 916 (sportsman version), the 916A (riot version) and the 916T (takedown version). 916 and 916A shotguns are seen with both bead and rifle sights and many long barreled 916 and 916A shotguns were cut down to 18-20" barrels for riot use. The 916T has a barrel connector that looks more like a High Standard 1200 FLITE KING series shotgun and many 916T shotguns have long (28" or more) barrels for sporting use. Production of the 916 ended in 1980 and was followed by the more highly-thought of Model 3000.
