The hand mortar is a firearm that was used mainly in the late 17th century and 18th century to throw fused grenades. At various times, this weapon was equipped with a matchlock, wheellock , or flintlock. Most hand mortars had short barrels, usually 2 to 5 inches (5-10 cm) long; the bore was 2-2.5 inches (5-6 cm). The hand mortar is sometimes considered as early predecessor of modern grenade launchers.
