Hard Times
|
Hard Times (also known as The Streetfighter) is a Depression-era drama set in New Orleans, starring Charles Bronson as Chaney, a drifter who arrives in the city and discovers the underground world of illegal bare-knuckle fighting. He meets Speed a fast-talking hustler (James Coburn), and convinces him to become his manager. He is an instant hit. As he continues to win Chaney and Speed run afoul of both mobsters and a wealthy rival fight promoter.
"Hard Times" was Walter Hill's directorial debut and was written by him as well. In a 2009 interview Hill had this to say about the film: "It was the best deal I ever made. Got a career out of it. Picture was well received on the whole, made money. Got me off and going." It was filmed on location in New Orleans in the fall of 1974.
Smith & Wesson .44 Double Action
The rival fight manager Pettibon (Edward Walsh) pulls a Smith & Wesson .44 Double Action when he refuses to give Speed (James Coburn) his winnings. Later Chaney (Charles Bronson) goes to Pettibon's bar to retrieve the money owed him and Speed. After clobbering Pettibone's men with his fists Chaney takes the revolver and shoots up the joint before leaving.
