The Dogs of War
The following weapons were used in the film The Dogs of War:
Rifles & Carbines
Colt Sporter 1 Carbine (Mocked up as XM177E2)
Faux XM177E2 carbines are carried by Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken), Terry (Ed O'Neill), Drew (Tom Berenger), and the rest of the mercenaries at the beginning of the film, when they are fleeing a Central American Airfield. They are not real CAR-15s nor XM177s. Special Effects Unlimited, Inc. converted Colt Sporter I Carbines with the 16" barrels and made them resemble the XM177 series carbines with an aftermarket flash hider.
Colt M16 Variant
Some South American troops on the runway, hold what appear to be M16 variants, during the opening scenes of the film.
Australian L1A1
The Zangaran troops carry what appears to be the Australian version of the FN FAL - The Lithgow Arsenal L1A1.
Valmet M71S
Some of the Central American soldiers are seen running with Valmet M71S Rifle with 20 round 5.56x45mm NATO magazines. A number of Valmet M71s' can also been seen in the hands of Zangaran troops policing the Zangaran civilians when the curfew siren sounds, as Shannon (Christopher Walken) is taking pictures from his hotel room window.
SKS
An SKS rifle is seen in the hands of a Zangaran guard who is later killed by Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) during his initial recon of the Zangaran capital. A number of SKS rifles can also be seen in the hands of a South American troops holding back the crowd on the runway during the opening scenes of the film.
Submachine Guns
Uzi
The main weapon used by the mercenaries during the final assault. There are a mix of real Uzi Submachine Guns and MAC-10s mocked up to resemble Uzis. Similarly modified MAC-10s (fake Uzis) or 'MAC-Uzis' have been seen in Raw Deal (1986), Stripes, The Killer Elite and on The A-Team television series.
During the first stages of the assault, Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) and Jinja (Eddie Tagoe) put Sionics Two Stage Sound Suppressors on their Uzis and use them to take out the sentries. Shannon's is also equipped with a small Star-Lite scope. As the battle begins all the main actors use Uzis. However in the final few minutes all have switched to MAC-10s disguised as Uzis.
MAC-10
Mixed in with the mercenaries using Uzis during the weapons training on the ship are a few standard MAC-10s.
Handguns
Walther P38
A Walther P38 is used by a Zangaran woman during the final assault.
M1911A1
A M1911A1 is used by Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) to shoot Colonel Bobi (George Harris) towards the end of the movie, though the pistol that he tosses to the desk moments later, looks like a Browning Hi-Power.
French M1935A Pistol
A M1935A Pistol (built at S.A.C.M. (Societe Alsacienne Construcion Mechanique)) is carried by Michel (Jean-François Stévenin), when his truck is inspected by the border police.
Beretta M1934
Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) keeps a Beretta M1934 in his refrigerator. He also removes seemingly the same pistol from a drawer when answering the door. It is identifiable by the heel-clip magazine release.
Smith & Wesson Model 10
Amongst the many handguns hidden around his New York Apartment, Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) also has a stub-nosed Smith & Wesson Model 10 , where he keeps his "bills".
Machine Guns
M60 Machine Gun
An M60 machine gun is used in the final assault. First on a fixed mount by the Zangaran troops and then by the mercenaries including Derek (Paul Freeman) who removes it from the mount for the final shootout at Kimba's compound. It should be noted that former SAS trooper Derek does the "correct" thing during most of his weapons use in the movie by firing short, controlled bursts from both the M60 and his Uzi.
Specialty Weapons
Manville 25mm Projectile Launcher
Known as the fictional "XM-18" in the movie, the multi-shot grenade launcher itself is the late model variant of the Manville Projectile Launcher. Originally it was designed in 1936 as a rotary-cylinder 12 gauge shotgun with 24-shell capacity. The device was later redesigned to fire 25mm tear gas or smoke grenades and flares and had a capacity of 18 shells. By the early 1940s Charles Manville developed his final version of the Manville Projectile Launcher, this time in 37mm with a 12 round capacity. Even with the advent of World War 2 occupying everyone's thoughts, the orders for a multiple grenade launcher didn't catch, especially since, when fully loaded, the Manville would be incredibly heavy. By 1943, the Manville Launcher was scrapped.
After decades of being out of production, the Movie "Dogs of War" generated incredible interest again in the Manville. Frankford Arsenal decided to renew the production with new materials and developed 25mm, 37mm, and 40mm versions - calling it the Hawk MM1 grenade launcher. It's also been written that Andries C. Piek, chairman of the Milkor company, was inspired to design the now-famous Milkor MGL after seeing the Manville in this movie.
The Manville Projectile Launcher was primarily used by Jamie Shannon (Christopher Walken) and Drew (Tom Berenger) in the final assault. Several internet sources claim that the "XM-18" was the first Manville 12 gauge shotgun (24 round capacity), but that is incorrect. The version in the film is the late-model 25mm Manville with 18 round capacity. As has been said in many online sources, the explosive effects of the Manville in the film are a piece of fiction. The "shells" are aluminum casings designed to take 12 gauge blanks.
M72 LAW
M72 LAWs are used by the Zangaran Mercenaries during the final assault for both anti-tank and as a bunker buster kind of weapon.
M18A1 Claymore
M18A1 Claymores are shown being laid out on the road by Drew (Tom Berenger) when he leads a groups of mercenaries towards the back entrance to the compound.
Trivia
In the novel from which the film is loosely based, the mercenaries use a cache of World War II MP40s purchased from an ex-SS soldier. For fire support, the mercenaries use RPG-7s and 60-mm mortars smuggled out of Yugoslavia. The Zangaran troops are armed with Mauser Gewehr 1898s. During the evacuation in the opening of the book, the mercenaries are armed with FN FALs rather than Colt SP1s mocked up to be XM177s. The evacuation is from Biafra (Southern Nigeria) rather than South America. The book is well worth a read.
