Inglourious Basterds is a 2009 World War II film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino and starring Brad Pitt, Christoph Waltz, Michael Fassbender, and Eli Roth. His eighth feature, Tarantino had started writing this film's screenplay in 1998, but had put it off to make Kill Bill when he couldn't come with an ending. Although the title is similar to the film The Inglorious Bastards, the two films have little in common aside from the World War II setting and cameos by director Enzo G. Castellari and actor Bo Svenson. The film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Original Screenplay, Best Director and Best Picture and Christoph Waltz received the award for Best Supporting Actor.
The following weapons were used in the film Inglourious Basterds:
SD Standartenfuhrer Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), Gestapo Maj. Hellstrom (August Diehl) and several other German officers carry Walther P38 pistols. At the end, Landa hands his to Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), who fires it himself. During the Nadine tavern gunfight, Hellstrom fires a P38 as do other German soldiers in the bar and Cpl. Wilhelm Wicki (Gedeon Burkhard), one of the "basterds".
Walther PPK
When disguised as an SS Hauptshturmfuhrer, British Lt. Archie Hicox (Michael Fassbender) carries a Walther PPK. During the same part of Operation Kino, Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger) disguises himself as a Obersturmfuhrer (Lieutenant First Class) and packs his own PPK. Both men end up aiming their pistols at Gestapo Maj. Hellstrom. After the gunfight in the Nadine tavern, Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) picks up Hicox's PPK and fires it.
Luger P08
As Lt. Raine "debriefs" Bridget by pressing his index finger into her leg wound, Donny Donowitz (Eli Roth) holds his Luger P08 on her. Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl), as a German private, carries a Luger as his issued sidearm and arms himself with it while attending the premiere of "Nation's Pride". Several characters (including the Basterds) have Luger holsters on their belts.
FN Model 1905 or Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket
Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) prepares for trouble at the premiere of "Nation's Pride" by loading a small automatic pistol and keeping it in her purse, eventually drawing and firing it.
This is most probably either a FN Model 1905 or a Colt Model 1908 Vest Pocket. The two pistols are virtually identical, coming from the same design by John Browning which he sold to FN Herstal in Belgium and Colt in the USA. They are most easily distinguished by the grip designs and logos, but as the grips of Shosanna's pistol are never seen clearly enough to identify, her pistol could be either the FN 1905 or Colt 1908, or one of the many FN 1905 imitations made by firearms manufacturers across Europe.
Shotguns
Sawed-Off O/U shotgun
When the "basterds" break Stiglitz out of custody from a Berlin jail, Donny Donowitz (Eli Roth) carries a sawed-off over/under shotgun, using it to shoot a German soldier guarding Stiglitz. It is best seen on a promotional image (seen in the Discussion section of this article).
Many German soldiers and guards throughout the film are seen with MP40s. Many of the "Basterds" use MP40s as well, including S/Sgt. Donny Donowitz (Eli Roth), PFC Smithson Utivich (B.J. Novak), PFC Omar Ulmer (Omar Doom), PFC Gerold Hirschberg (Samm Levine), and Oberfeldwebel Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger). Wilhelm (Alexander Fehling), another Oberfeldwebel, gets ahold of an MP40 during the Nadine tavern gunfight.
Some of the American soldiers in "Nation's Pride" carry M3 Grease Guns.
Rifles/Carbines
M1 Garand
As the "Basterds" are first assembled, M1 Garand rifles are seen slung over the shoulders of Wilhelm Wicki (Gedeon Burkhard), Smithson Utivich (B.J. Novak), PFC Andy Kagan (Paul Rust), PFC Michael Zimmerman (Michael Bacall), PFC Simon Sakowitz (Carlos Fidel), PFC Omar Ulmer (Omar Doom), and PFC Gerold Hirschberg (Samm Levine). They are also seen wielded by some of the American soldiers in the film-within-a-film "Nation's Pride".
Karabiner 98k
Some of the "basterds", including Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), Wilhelm Wicki (Gedeon Burkhard), and PFC Gerold Hirschberg (Samm Levine) carry German Karabiner 98k rifles, most likely taken from German troops they captured and killed. Raine's Karabiner has "Inglourious Basterds" carved into the butt. In the propaganda film-within-a-film "Nation's Pride", Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl) fires a Karabiner 98k. With trick editing in "Nation's Pride" (presumably to make the single German soldier appear like a "superhero" to the German audiences), Zoller's bolt-action Karabiner is made to appear to fire semi-automatic shots.
M1 Carbine
Some of the American soldiers in "Nation's Pride" carry M1 Carbines.
Machine Guns
MG42
Hugo Stiglitz (Til Schweiger) carries an MG42 during his first scene at the ambush on the Nazis.
Other
OSS pistol glove
Donny Donowitz (Eli Roth) and Omar Ulmer (Omar Doom) each use a .38-caliber short-range OSS Pistol Glove when assassinating the two guards outside the German high command. As in real life, these weapons are loaded with a .38 round and punched into the target to fire it.
Nation's Pride (Stolz der Nation) is the film-within-a-film in Inglourious Basterds, directed by Eli Roth (as German director Alois von Eichberg.) Although in Inglourious Basterds the film is described as requiring at least four reels, which would imply a running time of at least 44-48 minutes, the film is actually only a little over six minutes, five without the opening credits. The film features a cameo by Bo Svenson, star of the original The Inglorious Bastards as an American colonel who is reluctant to destroy the ancient tower occupied by Fredrick Zoller (Daniel Brühl). The entire film (all 6:10 of it) and an accompanying making-of featurette, starring Roth, Brühl, Sylvester Groth and Julie Dreyfus in character, are included in home video copies.
