Mulholland Falls is a 1996 film directed by Lee Tamahori (Die Another Day) and set in 1953 Los Angeles. The film stars Nick Nolte as the head of an unofficial unit of LAPD detectives (based on the LAPD's real-life "Hat Squad") who in 1953 are assigned to rid the city of organized crime. In the course of investigating the murder of a young woman (Jennifer Connelly), the squad finds that she has been linked to a US Army General in the Atomic Energy Commission (John Malkovich). Nolte would also co-star in 2013's Gangster Squad, a movie that also depicts this LAPD unit.
