Enfield EM-2 - .280 British

The Enfield EM-2, also known by the codename "Mamba" during development, was a prototype British rifle chambered in the intermediate .280 British round. Development of the weapon began in 1948, and in April 1951 a production variant was ready and the rifle was provisionally adopted as the No. 9 Mk 1. However, there was division within NATO about what round should become standard, with the USA strongly favouring the 7.62x51mm. When a new Government was elected in October 1951, they felt that standardisation within NATO was more important than the qualities of the round itself, so it was decided that a rifle chambered in 7.62x51mm rather than the .280 British would be adopted. Attempts were mode to convert the EM-2 to this new round (along with several other experimental "compromise" rounds), but ultimately they were unsuccessful with a modified version of the FN FAL being adopted in its place.
