M107 production date

The following is a table of M107 production numbers for the US Army from here:

FY2001 FY2002 FY2003 FY2204 FY2005
Quantity 48 150 600 600 600
Gross Cost $500,000 $2,100,000 $9,000,000 $8,700,000 $8,900,000
Unit Cost $10,417 $14,000 $15,000 $14,500 14,833

As you can see there were actually a number of rifles produced in 2001, but have listed it as 2002 for a few reasons. Firstly, it wasn't actually type classified as the M107 until the forth quarter of FY2002. Also, am not convinced these rifles were actually true M107s, as there were less than 50 made and the unit cost is vastly different so they could have been early versions or prototypes. (By the way I know the images on this page are wrong and are actually of the M82A1M, so don't 100% trust it, but I think the numbers and dates are correct. Here states that the M107 wasn't type classified until August 2003, so am not sure. However, the Blog lists the year as 2002.)

I think the confusion with the date comes about from the fact that it wasn't approved for full materiel release to soldiers in the field until 2005, and it was listed in the US Army's top 10 inventions of 2005 list.

Regardless of when it exactly was made, it was definitely before 2005, as the first batch of 100 rifles available for civilian purchase were released in 2004. --commando552 06:24, 19 January 2012 (CST)
