In the Line of Duty: Manhunt in the Dakotas (alternate title: Midnight Murders) is a 1991 NBC TV movie based on the real-life manhunt for Gordon Kahl after he killed two U.S. Marshals in North Dakota in 1983. The movie stars Rod Steiger as Kahl, and Michael Gross as Richard Mayberly, the federal agent sent to hunt him down.

U.S. Marshal Kenneth Muir draws a revolver while attempting to arrest Gordon Kahl outside of Medina, North Dakota. Smithville, Arkansas sheriff Gene Matthews (David Dwyer) also uses a revolver of unknown make in the finale when he enters the home that Kahl is holed up in.

Gordon Kahl (Rod Steiger) uses a Ruger Mini-14 rifle throughout the film. His son Yorie and accomplice Scott Faul (Christopher Rich) are also armed with Mini-14s when they engage U.S. Marshals in a shootout outside of Medina, North Dakota.

Deputy U.S. Marshal Bob Cheshire (Ray McKinnon) points a M16A1 at Gordon Kahl when he attempts to arrest him for parole violations. Other marshals and SWAT officers throughout the movie also use M16A1s.

CAR-15

CAR-15 rifles are used by some U.S Marshals while apprehending suspects following Kahl's escape.
