LT. Terence McDonagh (Nicolas Cage) uses a Smith & Wesson Model 29 with 6.5" barrel as his weapon of choice. He uses carry it inside his pants and without any holster. McDonagh refers to it as a ".44 Mag" when asked Mundt (Michael Shannon) to bring it back. I do not know if a police department would allow that caliber and that carring way.
