Happy 2022

Happy New Year! --Ben41 (talk) 15:49, 1 January 2022 (EST)

Happy New Year to my IMFDB friends. May you all get everything you want this year. --PyramidHead (talk) 16:01, 1 January 2022 (EST)

Proposal to streamline the TV category

I was thinking, we have a MAIN page for a series and then the individual seasons. Since I think (IMHO) that the Television category listing is really LONG and CUMBERSOME because of all the listings of EACH season, I propose that we only list the MAIN TITLE page of each series and then when the viewer clicks on THAT page, they see all the SEASONS as choices to click on.

For example: Airwolf

Airwolf - Season 1

Airwolf - Season 2

Airwolf - Season 3

Airwolf - Season 4

Instead of listing all the seasons, just put AIRWOLF as a single entry and then you could pick the various seasons from there. All the separate SEASON pages would still be there. It would streamline the list of TV shows way down, due to eliminating all the duplication by listing each and every separate season. MoviePropMaster2008 (talk) 17:47, 8 January 2022 (EST)

I am confused as to what you're proposing. That pages for a specific series of a show should not be tagged with the Television category, and that the disambigution pages should? --Tamarin88 (talk) 18:21, 8 January 2022 (EST)
I agree the TV page is maybe a bit tedious with all the season pages listed but as Tamarin pointed out I don't see any way to do so without removing the categorizations from all those individual season pages, which would be a bit of work and ultimately would - strictly speaking - be incorrect. IDK. I suppose an alternate idea is we could do the seasons as slashed 'subpages' within a main page similar to how HV3R does its weapon categories, but that would entail even more work setting up those subpages and moving the content for each individual season, as well as maybe tweaking existing templates and such. Again.. IDK. StanTheMan (talk) 23:04, 8 January 2022 (EST)
Currently we have 2,100 entries in the TV category. It is really so many that it hampers the work with the category? But if so, then in my opinion may be it would be advisable to create subcategories for the seasons (in case there are more than two ot three in the particulcar series, for example). And in order not to mix these categories with Genre, Author, Director and Nation categories, just remove tag TV (as well as tag Film) from abovementioned ones - these tags hardly do any good there. --Greg-Z (talk) 00:49, 9 January 2022 (EST)
How about just a "Television Series Season" category, leaving the original TV category for the series main pages? --Funkychinaman (talk) 21:04, 9 January 2022 (EST)
Yes, this is also a good option.
I would also like to note that in the case of renaming the pages of seasons or changing the structure to slashed 'subpages', as suggested above, we will get an incredibly colossal amount of work to change the links on the pages of guns and actors - hardly a pleasant prospect. Simple moving of the pages to special categories in one or another way wouldn't lead to such disaster.--Greg-Z (talk) 01:22, 10 January 2022 (EST)
Indeed. FCM has presented a very elegant and much simpler solution here. StanTheMan (talk) 00:02, 11 January 2022 (EST)

Halo TV series includes real firearms.

As the header suggests, the new TV series for Halo, yes that Halo, includes at least two real-life firearms, most notably an AKM of some sort, as well as what appears to be an Arex ReX Zero 1. I feel like this means the series (not the games, mind you), might actually qualify for a page.--BlackHawk510 (talk) 13:04, 31 January 2022 (EST)

Yeah, someone already made a page for it: Halo (TV Series). TheExplodingBarrel (talk) 13:12, 31 January 2022 (EST)
I noticed the pistol was missing, good ID--AgentGumby (talk) 13:13, 31 January 2022 (EST)

Far Cry requests

I've created a talk page for Far Cry New Dawn but currently Far Cry New Dawn simply redirects to Far Cry 5. Can an administrator change this?

Also, can the Far Cry 2 page be unlocked? There are some edits needed to bring that page a bit up to date.--AgentGumby (talk) 13:38, 3 February 2022 (EST)

After getting redirected to the FC5 page from the New Dawn page, just click the (Redirected from Far Cry New Dawn) text to bring you to the redirect page without redirecting back to the FC5 page. TheExplodingBarrel (talk) 13:51, 3 February 2022 (EST) Edit: Oh whoops, didn't see that the page was locked.
If the weapons in the spinoff are close enough to the base game, then put them on the page of the base game. We established that precedent with Blood Dragon. --Funkychinaman (talk) 14:32, 3 February 2022 (EST)
I've decided to make its own page as the 5 page would be huge otherwise.--AgentGumby (talk) 15:18, 3 February 2022 (EST)

Both unlocked.--Greg-Z (talk) 14:33, 3 February 2022 (EST)

Thanks!--AgentGumby (talk) 15:18, 3 February 2022 (EST)
Another request - can Far Cry 3 and Far Cry 4 be unlocked? Evil Tim seems to have locked a lot of these up before disappearing.--AgentGumby (talk) 15:30, 5 July 2022 (EDT)
Both unlocked.--Greg-Z (talk) 15:48, 5 July 2022 (EDT)
Thanks again!--AgentGumby (talk) 20:25, 5 July 2022 (EDT)

IMFDB is now banned in Russia

Well, that's to be expected. --Slon95 (talk) 20:37, 17 March 2022 (EDT)

Don't see it, at least for now. Firefox and Chrome both allow to open IMFDB without any tricks. I experienced problems with "connection timed out" from my smartphone for some time, but it was temporary, and now IMFDB opens quite well. So I hope it was a false alarm.--Greg-Z (talk) 01:18, 18 March 2022 (EDT)
Same. Everything works without VPN and other staff. Pustelga7 (talk) 11:34, 18 March 2022 (EDT)

I was surprised to see that you guys are still connected with us. --Jcordell (talk) 10:24, 18 March 2022 (EDT)

This is only because their providers are more "liberal" (a more "liberal" branch of the KGB, let's call everything by its proper name). Half of the sites I visit are very longtime don't available by default. If not for the favorable tarif, I would have left it long ago. --Slon95 (talk) 16:41, 19 March 2022 (EDT)

Increased attention to Eternals page

Hey everyone, I finished Eternals page today, but damn, I'm pretty unsure about any of the weapon models in this movie. More precisely, in the weapon involved in this dark scene in the Amazonian forest. So if anyone can see some other model in those tiny silhouettes in the background, let's talk about it. Are there actually any rules against mobile games on IMFDB?

On IMFDB, there seems to be an informal agreement that mobile games are not notable enough to warrant documentation on this website; there are no mobile game pages on this website, and users only document mobile game firearms via their own sandbox pages as personal projects. However, officially (as documented on the Rules, Standards and Principles page), there are no rules against mobile game pages; mobile games are professionally distributed video games, and the one rule where mobile apps are mentioned only states that user-made mobile apps are not allowed, the same as other user-made media.

So I would like to ask, what is actually stopping us from making pages on mobile games like Girls' Frontline and Call of Duty: Mobile? Is it just an informal agreement due to habits? If it is a concern about shovelware, I would like to argue that PC game markets are filled with shovelware too, and the average wiki editor's ability to reasonably judge a game's quality and notability should be enough to filter out the non-notable shovelware. --Wuzh (talk) 13:48, 4 April 2022 (EDT)

Just another step towards turning the site into IVGFDB, right? :) --Greg-Z (talk) 15:28, 4 April 2022 (EDT)
I say no. Maybe it's time to create a whole new website dedicated to cataloging weapons used in games. --Jcordell (talk) 22:00, 4 April 2022 (EDT)
As I've said before, this whole "no mobile games allowed" thing is archaic. Mobile games are now as popular as any other entertainment and have graphical fidelity on par with at least the PS3 generation. I suppose 10 years ago someone decided that mobile games are not relevant and detailed enough to be allowed but that is clearly not the case anymore. These obsolete notions should be reevaluated and mobile games should be allowed considering that there are already perfectly detailed sandbox articles that can serve as a blueprint. --Nanomat (talk) 22:18, 4 April 2022 (EDT)
If I may suggest, I'd consider having a complete article for a mobile game done first as a proof-of-concept. I think part of the hesitancy here is to safeguard against an influx of 'noeffort' pages.--AgentGumby (talk) 18:00, 11 April 2022 (EDT)
I think we cast a pretty wide net here when it comes to eligible titles. I was hoping we would be able to avoid vetting titles one by one. --Funkychinaman (talk) 10:10, 12 April 2022 (EDT)
This is a more or less complete article for a mobile game. Also, here is the latest reason in favor of dropping the no mobile games rule. --Nanomat (talk) 19:01, 15 April 2022 (EDT)
While I'm aware of the COD Mobile page, and I don't mean to demean the work already put on it, I'm not seeing any in-gameplay screenshots on that page yet - sure, it passes the minimum I guess, but I mean it'd be best to have something a little fully-documented. Granted CODM has a ton of guns and is still in live service so its a more challenging example anyway. Also, if you mostly plan on documenting mobile games in current mainstream series, maybe they can go on the talk page for their category? IE, for R6 Mobile, on the Category talk:Tom Clancy.--AgentGumby (talk) 19:49, 15 April 2022 (EDT)

For the record, while I am in favor of having mobile games be allowed as work pages, I am currently only asking for clarification on our rules regarding mobile games, and how this "only on sandboxes" situation came about. Were there previous discussions surrounding this topic? --Wuzh (talk) 22:25, 4 April 2022 (EDT)

I proposed the ban a few years ago, and it was discussed in the admin-only section of the forum. Motion passed, and it was added to the RSP shortly afterwards. As for sandboxes, I personally give a lot of leeway when it comes to sandboxes. But at the end of the day, we already allow many forms of media, and I don't think it's too difficult to work around our restrictions. --Funkychinaman (talk) 10:54, 5 April 2022 (EDT)
2.10 Computer and Video Games Requirements - "Any video game submitted to the site must be a legitimate title, released for the PC, Mac, or a game console."
Sounds like a black-and-white exclusion to me, not just an 'informal agreement'; last I checked, phones and tablets aren't considered game consoles. While I grant there is at this stage perhaps some basis for a reevaluation of that rule, not seeing where there's wiggle room about it at present since by plain text they just aren't allowed. As for sandboxes, its to my understanding that while they're primarily meant to be placeholders for actual soon-to-be-published pages, there is some leeway for them to be a sort-of free-for-all zone for users. StanTheMan (talk) 00:09, 5 April 2022 (EDT)
"Other Media that are not films: The rule applies to user-made flash games, mobile apps, YouTube home movies/shorts done with airsoft guns, faux commercials, skits or anything else of the sort. The only exceptions will be user-created mods for first-person shooter video game (i.e. any of the mods for "Half-Life") - provided they are well-known and popular enough to warrant a page. When in doubt, ask an administrator and we will determine a game mod's value to IMFDB." --Funkychinaman (talk) 10:41, 5 April 2022 (EDT)

New News Media Mention

IMFDB is cited for list of firearms used by Matthew McConaughey. Not massively significant, but noting for posterity. VladVladson (talk) 19:01, 7 June 2022 (EDT)

It's Breitbart, lol.--AgentGumby (talk) 19:11, 7 June 2022 (EDT)

A new template for Early Access games?

Currently games like Ready or Not, and Arma Reforger (but not Hot Dogs, Horseshoes & Hand Grenades oddly enough) use the "Upcoming" template, which identifies them as "unrelased" despite having some form of release. Obviously, this is less than desirable. Can we make a new template for cases like this? Wording like "While officially released in some form, this video game is actively receiving new content via patches. This page may not yet reflect new additions, and current information is subject to change." should be applicable to games in Early Access, pages based on Open Beta releases, those that have had demos released, and released (mostly multiplayer focused) games that get new content (including firearms) with some regularity. For the picture, some kind of (unit) patch for a play on (software) patch, or gen 1 Glock to a more modern Glock. -VladVladson (talk) 21:00, 6 July 2022 (EDT)

I daresay the existing ongoing template might be a good basis to make this proposed new template, if not perhaps just tweak that one a bit for this purpose. Eh StanTheMan (talk) 23:01, 6 July 2022 (EDT)
