Wittorf's pistol

The Wittorf's pistol extremely puzzled me. I had a gut feeling that this is a self-made weapon. And after some searching I found this: a photo of a real pistol, copyrighted by Volkskundemuseum Schleswig. Looks like it's not a pistol but a submachine gun! Hope it would help. --Greg-Z (talk) 15:39, 30 March 2022 (EDT)

An article in German with a photo of the real Thompson used by the gang. --Greg-Z (talk) 16:03, 30 March 2022 (EDT)
Quite clearly M1928A1 of military release (expected for Germany), and not at all the Chicagoan that in the film.

It's a cut-down Iver Johnson/Erma .22 M1 Carbine clone. That long operating rod that connects from under the barrel to the charging handle gives it away as a M1 Garand/M1 Carbine-descended design. Thank you all! I also came across those two articles, but I had no idea what it could be. The mystery is now solved.--HighPhigh (talk) 08:22, 31 March 2022 (EDT)
