A Call to Spy details the exploits of real-life spies hired by the Special Operations Executive (SOE) and sent into France during World War II, written, produced, and starring Sarah Megan Thomas as American-born agent Virginia Hall. In addition to Virginia Hall, real-life SOE agents and administrators are depicted, including Vera Atkins (Stana Katic), Maurice Buckmaster (Linus Roache), and Noor Inayat Khan (Radhika Apte).

Virginia Hall (Sarah Megan Thomas) uses a Luger P08 when demonstrating how the French resistance can incorporate firearms into their work, instructing that "when you use a gun, double tap: torso, head." Lugers are also prominently used by German Army soldiers and Vichy officers.
