Darkest of Days
|
Darkest of Days is a first-person shooter that tells the story of Alexander Morris, a soldier fighting during Custer's Last Stand at Little Bighorn, who is suddenly dragged through time to become a post-22nd century agent for the corporation Kronotek, a corporation who strives to preserve and protect history and whose founder has disappeared leading to various disturbances in time causing various historical figures to be put into danger. Morris as well as fellow agent Dexter go through various time periods to ensure these figures survive, all the while battling a mysterious group called the Opposition. Since the game's main selling point is time travel, Morris goes to a myriad of historical locations, including the Battle of Antietam during the American Civil War, the Battle of Tannenburg during the First World War, a WWII-era POW camp, and Pompeii during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. All these locations come with a group of period weapons to use, though Morris is usually given a weapon from the 22nd Century to "even the odds".
The following weapons appear in the video game Darkest of Days:
Handguns
Colt 1860 Army
The first weapon that Morris gets is the "Colt Revolver", a Colt 1860 Army. It is first used at the Little Bighorn battle and later used during the Antietam Campaign. While not packing the punch of the Civil War rifles, it is much faster to reload, achieved by having Morris break the Colt open on a invisible hinge to swap cylinders.
Mauser C96
The Mauser C96 pistol appears during the World War 1 segments of the game. Similar to the Colt 1860 in the Civil War segments, the C96 is a faster firing and reloading counterpart to the slower bolt-action rifles in the World War 1 segments. It appears to be based on the post-war short-barreled "Red 9" version, which would be anachronistic for the WW1 setting. It also fires fully-automatically, a feature only present on the post-war Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer pistol and not the regular C96 depicted. Morris also reloads by jamming the stripper clip into the rear sight instead of the ejection sight; he also loads a full ten rounds regardless of how many remain in the magazine.
Luger P08
The main German sidearm for the World War 1 and World War 2 segments is the Luger P08, referred to simply as the "Luger". It is based on the "Marine" model, but has an additional rear sight from the "Artillery" model.
"DNGr Pistol"
The DNGr Pistol is a post-22nd century side-arm that Morris is given on some missions, like most of the other post-22nd century firearms. It comes with a LAM activated via pressure switch duct taped to the grip.
Rifles
1860 Henry
The Henry 1860 rifle appears during the Antietam missions and the Little Bighorn segment. It is always seen with its leaf sight raised and is inaccurately loaded from a side gate, as the Winchester Model 1866 "Yellow Boy", rather than from the front of the magazine tube.
Enfield Pattern 1853
The Enfield Pattern 1853 appears during the Antietam missions, mounted with a bayonet and inaccurately referred to as the "Springfield Musket". Morris also fails to place a percussion cap on the nipple when reloading.
Morgan James Rifle
The Morgan James Rifle is used during the Antietam campaign. It's very useful for sniping, but like the Springfield Musket has a slow reload time. Also like the Springfield Musket, a percussion cap is never placed during the reload animation. The weapon also appears wrapped in burlap sacking to camouflage it. The rifle in the game is almost twice as short as in real life, obviously in order not to bother with reloading animation, so this view would likely require a strongly tilt it.
Mauser Gewehr 1898
The mainstay rifle for the German Army for World War 1, the Mauser Gewehr 1898 is seen in the hands of German troops. It comes in two versions: standard infantry (appears only in WWI missions), and sniper version (for both WWI and WWII missions). The sniper version appears to be fixed with a WWII era ZF41 scope for the G98's "son", the Kar98k, therefore making it anachronistic for the WWI sections of the game. During the WWII missions, strangely, most German guards to be equipped with them (one would think snipers would be the smallest proportion of troops, especially considering the cost of optical scopes and training).
Mosin Nagant M1891
The Mosin-Nagant M1891, or as the game calls it, the "Nagant", is the Russian counterpart to the Gewehr 1898 and is found in reasonable supply during the World War 1 missions.
"Assault Rifle-55"
One of the many futuristic weapons in the game, the "Assault Rifle 55" or "AR-55" is given to the player at random intervals, such as during the Antietam missions or during the Pompeii missions. It's very similar to the FN F2000 Tactical, but uses the top-position detachable magazines as the FN P90.
"Barracuda"
A futuristic semi-avtomatic heavy sniper rifle, issued to Morris during one of the WW2 missions. It has a infinity ammo, but rifle can be used only for firing with bipod, at suitable sniper positions.
"M7 Rifle"
A fictional bullpap assault rifle, equipped with a scope. It carried by Opposition soldiers, and can be picked up and used by the player. Compared to many other futuristic weapons in the game, the M7 has a realistic design based on the current bullpup rifles (in particular, slightly resembling the FN SCAR with the bullpup conversion).
Submachine Guns
MP-34
The Steyr MP34 submachine gun appears during the World War II segments in the hands of German troops, inaccurately depicted as a closed-bolt weapon. Strangely, instead of using its actual stick magazine, the in-game MP34 uses a Trommelmagazin 08 (a 32-round drum magazine for the MP18 and P08) inserted upside-down. It also somehow holds 50 rounds.
"Automatic Machine Pistol-60"
A futuristic SMG given to the player on random occasions, usually when he is facing enemies wielding muskets, or bronze spears and swords.
Machine Guns
Maxim Gun
The standard German machine gun seen during the World War 1 and World War 2 segments is this weird Maxim Gun hybrid. It is a mix of a MG 08's sledge mount and a Maxim M1910/30's barrel jacket.
Shotguns
"C07 Shotgun"
Another 22nd Century firearm given to Morris as "leverage", this time being a semi-auto shotgun the player gets during some of the World War 1 missions. It reloads with a detachable tube magazine; but since the magazine is loaded where there should be a barrel (or directly into it?), it only remains to guess how this can work at all.
Rocket Launchers
"MA-22 Rocket Launcher"
A futuristic rocket launcher Morris gets his hands on, which operates like a FGM-148 Javelin on steroids.
Flamethrowers
"FMG Heat Gun"
A futuristic flamethrower given to Morris, fittingly enough, during the Pompeii Mission.
Grenades
Hybrid hand grenade
A fictional hybrid hand grenade used in missions set in World War 1 and World War 2. The grenade appears to be a mixture of a Model 24's stick mechanism with the head replaced with a Mills Bomb.
Cannons
Civil War Cannon
In the Civil War missions, various cannons can be seen used by both Union and Confederate troops, and Morris does get to use one at one point.
21 cm Mörser 16
During the World War 1 Missions, Morris can run into some unusable German Krupp 21 cm Mörser 16 Howitzers. The appearance of this howitzer during the battle of Tannenberg is anachronistic.
