The No.1 Mk.I Cup Discharger is a rifle grenade launcher designed for use on the Lee-Enfield No. 1 Mk III*, developed during WWI. The grenade launcher fired the No. 36 Mills Bomb with a special gas check base attached (though it can also fire other grenades). Because of the heavy recoil of launching a rifle grenade, some rifles during WWII were specifically modified with wire wrappings and a reinforcing bolt to reinforce the weapon and prevent the stock and forearm from splitting under recoil. These modified rifles were only used in the grenade launcher role, and were called EY rifles, which stood for "EmergencY use" (other sources instead say that EY stood for Edward Yule, the designer of the weapon).
