SA-14 Gremlin (9K34 Strela-3) launch tube (without gripstock and battery cooling unit) and missile - 72mm

SA-14 Gremlin is the NATO reporting name of the 9K34 Strela-3, a Russian man portable surface to air missile. It is heavily based on the SA-7 Grail (9K32 Strela-2) to the point where it is nearly identical in appearance: the main feature that differentiates the two is that the SA-14 has a spherical battery coolant unit (BCU) at the front of the gripstock under the launch tube's muzzle, while the SA-7 has a cylindrical unit with a plunger-like structure extending from the front, which is just a thermal battery. The BCU contains not just a thermal battery, but also a supply of liquefied gas (liquid nitrogen, as opposed to the more inert but harder to manufacture liquid argon used by the FIM-92 Stinger) which is used to cool the missile's IR seeker to operating temperature prior to launch.

The naval variant is referred to by the NATO designation SA-N-8.

The SA-14 Gremlin and variants can be seen in the following films, television series, video games, and anime used by the following actors:
