The Road to Calvary (Khozhdenie po mukam) is a Soviet 1957-1959 three-part mini series directed by Grigoriy Roshal and based on the eponymous historical novel trilogy by Aleksey Nikolayevich Tolstoy. The series depict the fate of sisters Dasha and Katya Bulavins and their beloved ones, Ivan Telegin and Vadim Roshchin, during the Great War, Russian revolution and Russian Civil war.

The mini series is the first screen adaptation of the novel, followed by 1977 TV series, and 2017 TV series.

Nagant M1895

Nagant M1895 revolvers are most often used handguns in the series, notably used by Ivan Ilyich Telegin (Vadim Medvedev), Vadim Petrovich Roshchin (Nikolai Gritsenko), and Nestor Ivanovych Makhno, known as Bat'ka Makhno (Vitaliy Matveev).

In one scene in "Sisters" (Part 1) Nikolay Ivanovich Smokovnikov (Viktor Sharlakhov) threatens his wife Ekaterina Dmitrievna (Rufina Nifontova) with a pocket revolver of unknown model. This is possibly a toy cap gun.

Mauser C96

Mauser C96 pistols are often seen during the events of Russian civil war in "Eighteenth Year" and "Somber Morning", notably used by Bolshevik Chugai (Boris Andreyev), Red commanders Gymza (Mikhail Gladysh) and Sorokin (Evgeniy Matveev), and brigand Aleksey Krasilnikov (Leonid Parkhomenko).

Pocket pistol

In "Somber Morning" (Part 3) Lyova Zadov (Vladimir Belokurov), Makhno's chief of counterintelligence, has an FN Model 1905-style pocket pistol, possibly some Spanish or Czech version.

Historically correct Mosin Nagant M1891 rifles are widely used during the events of Great War and Russian revolution and Civil war. Both Infantry and Dragoon models can be seen.

Mannlicher M1888-90

In "Sisters" (Part 1) a guard in Austro-Hungarian camp for Russian POWs is armed with a Mannlicher rifle. It appears to be a pre-M1895 model, most likely M88-90 or M89.

The magazine is separated from trigger guard which allows to differ this rifle from later Mannlicher M1895.

The bayonet is longer than standard Austro-Hungarian bayonets of the appropriated era and looks more like German bayonets for Gewehr 98.

Mauser Gewehr 98

Most Austro-Hungarian soldiers in "Sisters" (Part 1) are armed with Mauser Gewehr 98 rifles instead of correct Mannlichers. In "Somber Morning" (Part 3) several of Makhno's men carry Gewehr 98s.
