The Man with the Rifle (Chelovek s ruzhyom) is a Soviet 1938 historical movie directed Sergei Yutkevich and based on the play by Nikolay Pogodin. The story is set in Autumn 1917. Pvt. Ivan Shadrin (Boris Tenin) gets an leave from frontline and appears in Petrograd next day after the October Revolution. Here Shadrin accidentally meets Vladimir Lenin and is deeply impressed with his personality. He joins Red Guards and leads a unit against the counterrevolutionary forces.
The following weapons were used in the film The Man with the Rifle (Chelovek s ruzhyom):
Red Guards member Kostya Zhigilev (Mark Bernes) carries a Nagant M1895 revolver. Nagants are also carried by Russian Army officers, mostly seen in holsters.
In the opening scene German troops use a Maxim M1910/30 machine gun, standing for MG08. Later Maxims, standing for original M1910s, are seen in Petrograd, especially in Bolsheviks headquarters in Smolny. In the climactic scene Red Guards unit uses a Maxim M1910/30 during the battle against the armoured train of counterrevolutionaries that is also armed with several Maxims. During the battle Yevtushenko (Boris Chirkov) and then Kostya Zhigilev (Mark Bernes) fire the Maxim.
Maxim M1910
In one scene a Maxim M1910 with smooth water jacket is seen.
Other Weapons
RG-14 Hand Grenade
RG-14 (or RG-14/30) hand grenades are used by Red Guards.
Trivia
Armoured Car
An armoured car is seen on Petrograd streets. It looks very similar to Russo-Balt Type C that was the first serially produced Russian armoured car. None of Type C survived after 1920s but the film used vehicle is possibly a genuine hull, placed on more modern chassis.
Armoured Trains
An armoured train is used by conterrevolutionary forces against the Red Guards. It is a fairly correct replica of Great War era Russian armoured train. It is armed with two 3-inch M1902 field guns, one in each vagon, and numerous Maxim machine guns.
Another armoured train is used by Red Guards in the final scene. It has very formidable outlook but all its guns are pure mockups.
122-mm Howitzer M1910
During the battle against the armoured train Red Guards use two 122-mm howitzers M1910.
