The Killing Fields is a 1984 drama directed by Roland Joffe and stars Sam Waterston as Sydney Schanberg, a New York Times journalist who along with his fellow colleague Dith Pran (Haing S. Ngor ) were witnesses to the rise of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia in the 1970s. Haing Ngor (who himself also endured the real-life Killing Fields of Cambodia) would win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Pran in the film.
