Oil Lamps (Original title: Petrolejové lampy) is a 1971 Czechoslovak drama. Directed by Juraj Herz ​​according to the book of Jaroslav Havlícek. The story focuses on Stepa Kiliánová (Iva Janzurová), the daughter of a wealthy master mason and farmer's wife, who lives in a small town at early 20th century. Her fate was connected with man of her dreams, cousin Pavel Malina (Petr Cepek), lieutenant of the Austro-Hungarian army, which was infected of syphilis during his service, which leads to his progressive paralysis. The film follows the transformation of urban ladies in hard-working peasant woman, who must also care for a dying husband.
