Roman Polanski (middle) with an Luger P08 as Mundek in A Generation (Pokolenie) (1955)

Roman Polanski is a French-Polish film director, producer, writer and actor. In 1968 he moved to the United States where he made Oscar-winning horror film Rosemary's Baby (1968) and Chinatown (1974), which was nominated for eleven Academy Awards. He received an Academy Award for Best Director for The Pianist in 2002.

In 1969, Polanski's pregnant wife, actress Sharon Tate, was murdered by members of the Manson Family. In 1977 Polanski was arrested for rape by use of drugs, perversion, sodomy, lewd and lascivious acts upon a child under 14, and furnishing a controlled substance to a minor, eventually pleading down to only statutory rape. To avoid sentencing , Polanski fled to his home in London, eventually settling in France, where as a French citizen, he can avoid extradition to the United States. He has been unable to enter the United States ever since, and since he has already plead guilty to a crime, no statute of limitation applies.
