Monk was a USA Network original series that aired for 8 seasons from 2002-2009 and starred Tony Shalhoub as a police consultant for the SFPD who helps solve cases while dealing with his obsessive compulsive disorder.
The following weapons were seen in the television series Monk:
The Beretta 92FS is seen used by various characters in the series including police consultant Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub), Captain Stottlemeyer (Ted Levine), and Lt. Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford). The Beretta is Randy's sidearm throughout the first half of the series, before he swaps to using a Glock 17 sometime prior to the seventh season.
In the pilot episode, "Mr. Monk and the Candidate" (S01E02), Monk grazes a suspect with a blind shot in the dark using a Beretta 92FS, borrowed from Disher.
In Season 2's "Mr. Monk and the Captain's Wife" (S02E14), bank robber Evan Coker (Daniel Goddard) uses a hunting rifle to stop a tow truck repossessing his car, which still contains his 9mm Beretta in the glovebox.
In Season 3's "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine" (S03E09), "Mr. Monk Gets Cabin Fever," (S03E12), Stottlemeyer carries a Beretta 92FS instead of his usual Smith & Wesson 3913. In "Cabin Fever," both he and Disher use Berettas during the shootout with two Chinese hitmen.
In "Mr. Monk Gets Jury Duty" (S4E16), Miguel Escobar's girlfriend (Emmanuelle Vaugier) takes a Beretta off a deputy guarding the jury room.
In the series finale "Mr. Monk and the End, Part II" (S8E16), Monk also holds a Beretta on Judge Rickover (Craig T. Nelson).
"Lane & Westen"
Probably because of legal objections that came after the episode "Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man," subsequent Beretta pistols which appeared in the series were given the fictional name "Lane & Westen." Even with the alternative name, they are clearly Beretta pistols, and in "Mr. Monk and the Captain's Wife," Evan Coker's handgun is explicitly referred to by Disher as a Beretta. To avoid confusion for any viewers, all "Lane & Westen" pistols will be referred to in this article by the "Beretta" name.
In Season 2's "Mr. Monk and the Three Pies" (S02E11), Monk's brother Ambrose (John Turturro) overhears his neighbor, Pat van Ranken (Holt McCallany) murder his wife, Rita, by shooting her with a 9mm "Lane & Westen." Ambrose claims to be able to recognize the gun just by the shot it fired; Adrian is skeptical at first, stating that Lane & Westen (Beretta) doesn't make a 9mm pistol, but Ambrose counters that they did until 1992 (and he wrote the manual for it). A pistol manufacturer that does not offer a 9mm caliber-weapon is virtually unheard of.
Monk's own police-issue sidearm, as seen in Season 6's "Mr. Monk Is On The Run, Part I" (S06E15) is also a Beretta 92FS described as a Lane & Westen. In "Mr. Monk Is On the Run Part 1" John Rollins (Scott Glenn) frames Monk for murder by shooting Frank Nunn with another Beretta, after replacing the barrel with the barrel from Monk's own gun, then switching them back. At times, the handgun Monk is seen handling is a Beretta 92SB as evidenced by the rounded trigger guard. Sometimes, it appears to be a Beretta 92FS.
In Season 7's "Mr. Monk's Other Brother" (S07E10), Adrian's half-brother Jack, Jr. (Steve Zahn) "borrows" Monk's pistol and uses it to return fire when prison guard Daniel Reese (Titus Welliver) opens fire on them.
Beretta 92FS Centurion
In Season 2's "Mr. Monk and the Very Very Old Man" (S02E05), Lt. Randy Disher (Jason Gray-Stanford), in trying to distract Captain Stottlemeyer's wife Karen, shows off his newly issued Beretta 92FS Centurion sidearm, correctly described as a "Beretta 9mm Centurion." Unfortunately, he forgets the fact that Karen is a pacifist.
Beretta 950 Jetfire
A Beretta 950 Jetfire is used by coin dealer Jacob Posner (J.P. Manoux) in "Mr. Monk Is Up All Night" (S06E09) to kill one of the con men who ripped him off, and then take the other members of the con game hostage.
Colt 1908 Vest Pocket
In Season 4's "Mr. Monk Gets Jury Duty" (S04E16), Miguel Escobar's girlfriend (Emmanuelle Vaugier) hides what appears to be a Colt 1908 Pocket in her coffee mug and uses it to threaten Monk and the other jurors.
Colt Double Eagle
A Colt Double Eagle is seen in the hands of the leader of a gang to threaten Karl Torini (Steve Valentine) in Season 7's "Mr. Monk and the Magician" (S07E15) after Torini makes the ringleader's watch disappear.
In "Mr. Monk Goes to the Dentist," (S04E15) Denny Jardeen (Steve Heinze) shoots an armored car driver with what appears to be a Double Eagle pistol.
John Keyes (Marcus Giamatti) uses this type of pistol in "Mr. Monk and the Lady Next Door" (S07E12) when robbing a jewelry store, and executes the manager when he recognizes Keyes.
Colt Commander
What appears to be a Colt Commander) is pulled by Miguel Escobar (Carlos Gomez) in "Mr. Monk Gets Jury Duty" (S4E16).
Glock 17
In Season 2's "Mr. Monk Goes to the Ballgame" (S02E03), Walker Browning (Rainn Wilson) appears to use a Glock 17.
In Season 3's "Mr. Monk Gets Cabin Fever" (S03E12), FBI Special Agent Grooms (Josh Stamberg) shoots a Chinese assassin with a Glock pistol (exact model unknown), possibly a Glock 22 since that is the standard issue sidearm of FBI agents.
In Season 4's "Mr. Monk Goes Home Again" (S04E02), Paul Gilstrap (David Weisenberg) shoots an armored car driver with his own Glock 17 in an attempt to cover up the fact that the driver had eaten a poisoned candy bar, which would have been evidence of an aborted serial killer scheme that Gilstrap would have concocted.
In Season 4's "Mr. Monk and the Secret Santa" (S04E09), criminal Frank Prager (Gill Gayle) fires five rounds at Captain Stottlemeyer with a Glock 17, leaving an "M" on the side of a wall to remind Stottlemeyer about his brother Michael.
In Season 6's "Mr. Monk Is Up All Night" (S06E09), a fake drug dealer "kills" an "undercover cop" with what appears to be a Glock pistol to con Jacob Posner (J.P. Manoux), but it is difficult to identify, since the scene where it appears is observed entirely through a window that Monk is peeking through.
In the seventh and eighth seasons, Randy uses a third generation Glock 17 as his sidearm.
Kahr K9
In the Season 8 episode "Mr. Monk is the Best Man" (S08E13), criminal Stephanie Briggs (Teri Polo) holds Stottlemeyer and Monk at gunpoint after recovering a pistol that she stuffed in a garment bag. When Stottlemeyer tells his girlfriend not to worry because the gun is not loaded, Stephanie responds by firing a round into the air - at which point the slide locks back, and Stottlemeyer informs Stephanie that the clip fell out into the garment bag, and she just spent the one round left in the chamber.
Ruger KP89
Tony Gamelobo (Kirk Diedrich) holds a Ruger KP89 during Monk's summation of the bank robbery in "Mr. Monk and the Buried Treasure". The appearance of the barrel and trigger guard makes it possible to identify.
Ruger KP944
A .40 caliber Ruger KP944 is used by Denny Jardeen (Steve Heinze) during the armored car hijacking in "Mr. Monk Goes to the Dentist" (S04E15).
SIG-Sauer P239
In "Mr. Monk Buys a House" (S07E01), money-seeking handyman "Honest" Jake Phillips (Brad Garrett) takes Monk and Natalie hostage with a SIG-Sauer P239. After subduing them and recovering the money, he then executes his Hispanic partner "Honest" Ramone (Ivo Nandi) using it.
SIG-Sauer P226
In the season 5 episode "Mr. Monk Is At Your Service" (S05E12), Paul Buchanan (Sean Astin) shoots and kills his butler with a SIG-Sauer P226 after figuring out who has been blackmailing him for months.
In the Season 6 episode "Mr. Monk and the Birds and the Bees" (S06E05), sports agent Rob Sherman (Vincent Ventresca) shoots career burglar Dewey Jordan with his own 9mm pistol, and, when his wife comes running down to investigate, shoots her dead with a .38-caliber revolver, which he then places in the dead Dewey's hand, to frame him for the murder. When reconstructing the scenario for Monk, Disher describes the pistol as a Glock, but during the scene, Sherman is actually holding what appears to be a SIG-Sauer P226Non Gun.
SIG-Sauer P228
In Season 5's "Mr. Monk and the Really, Really Dead Guy", FBI Special Agent Thorpe (Chris Williams) carries a SIG-Sauer P228 as his sidearm. Most real life agents tend to use Glock weapons, like Glock 22s.
Smith & Wesson 3913
Stottlemeyer uses a Smith & Wesson 3913 as his sidearm for most of the series, although there are times during the series (notably season 3) when he uses a Beretta 92FS instead. Comically, in "Mr. Monk and the Very, Very Old Man" (S02E05), he has to hide it in a drawer whenever his wife comes around, since she is a pacifist and he has to give the impression that he goes unarmed.
The size and dimensions of the pistol, as well as the diameter of the barrel, indicate the model. Various other cops and criminals use various Smith & Wesson pistols as well.
In the episode "Mr. Monk Can't See A Thing" (S05E04), a blind Monk grabs Stottlemeyer's gun and uses it to shoot Peter Breen (Jamie Kaler), advancing on them with a knife.
Smith & Wesson 6906
In the episode "Mr. Monk's Favorite Show" (S08E01), actress Christine Rapp (Elizabeth Perkins), the actress Monk is protecting, uses a Smith & Wesson 6906 to "defend herself".
This also appears to be the weapon utilized by Mandy Bronson (Sarah Brown) in "Mr. Monk and the Leper" (S05E10) to kill her accomplice and later when she opens fire on Monk and Natalie as they try to escape in a hot air balloon.
Springfield 1911 Loaded
In the Season 3 episode "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine," (S03E09) Lester Highsmith (Ken Marino) uses what appears to be a Springfield 1911 Loaded to open fire on police officers.
Walther P38
In the episode "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine" (S03E09) Monk uses a water pistol modeled on a Walther P38 in an attempt to bluff Lester Highsmith (Ken Marino) at an industrial park, only, to his embarrassment, to let the barrel drip, revealing its true nature. Monk's water pistol, noticeably, lacks several safety features that are necessary on water pistols to tell them apart from regular pistols (to avoid the risk of child injuries).
In the episode "Mr. Monk is Underwater" (S07E05) Monk borrows a sidearm from Steven Albright (Casper Van Dien) to test whether a plastic bottle found at a crime scene could be utilized as a silencer, screwed on with surgical tape. The gun Albright hands to Monk is a Walther P38, despite the fact that the Beretta 92FS is the normal sidearm issued to the U.S. Navy. The Walther was probably used because its long, thin barrel makes it easy for Monk to make the experiment. In the flashback summation at the end of the episode, Commander Whitaker (William Atherton) is seen using a Walther P38 equipped with an improvised suppressor made from a cream soda bottle screwed on to the barrel and tightened with surgical tape.
Walther PPK
Hal Tucker (Andy Richter) takes Monk hostage with a Walther PPK in "Mr. Monk Makes a Friend" (S05E11).
Walther PPK/S
In Season 1's "Mr. Monk Takes A Vacation" (S01E10), hotel security chief and cop wannabe Rita Bronwyn (Polly Draper) carries a Walther PPK/S.
In the Season 3 premiere "Mr. Monk Takes Manhattan" (S03E01), Steven Leight (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) shoots and kills his wife in Central Park with what appears to be a "Non Gun" version of the Walther PPK, then kills the Latvian ambassador and his bodyguards later on with the same weapon. Incongruously, the bullets recovered from the crime scene are described as .22 caliber, when the Walther PPK is chambered in .32 ACP and .38 ACP.
In the Season 6 premiere "Mr. Monk and His Biggest Fan" (S06E01), John Ringel (John Mese) takes Monk and Marci Maven (Sarah Silverman) hostage with a Walther PPK. He later uses it during a shootout with Stottlemeyer and Disher.
In Season 7's "Mr. Monk on Wheels," (S07E11) criminal John Kuramoto (Alain Uy) shoots Monk in his left leg with a Walther PPK/S. Later in the episode, Sarah Longson (Pamela Adlon), his employer, turns on him and kills him with his own weapon. The first good look at the gun comes at the end when Natalie (Traylor Howard) chases Sarah out of a bioengineering lab, and she pulls the gun out of her purse. After a struggle for the gun, it is knocked away and Natalie is able to grab it. She appears to be very inexperienced with firearms, as she unintentionally discharges a bullet into Monk's right leg when she turns around. This completely contradicts the fact that dialogue in "Mr. Monk and the Three Julies" (S06E13) suggests Natalie to have experienced marksmanship.
In Season 8's "Mr. Monk Is Someone Else," (S08E04) while masquerading as contract killer Frank DePalma, Monk straps what looks like a Walther PPK to an ankle holster as a backup gun (and then conceals it with his pant leg), though only to fit in with the character.
Vektor CP1
During a shootout with the police in Season 5's "Mr. Monk Gets a New Shrink" (S05E07), drug dealer Francis Merrigan (Gordon Clapp) shoots at Dr. Kroger (Stanley Kamel) with a Vektor CP1 handgun, but Harold Krenshaw (Tim Bagley) sees this and intercepts the bullet in the chest. Prior to this, Harold tries to sneak around Merrigan and his accomplice to get to Monk and Dr. Kroger and even picks up a spare Vektor (causing Monk and Dr. Kroger to gesture for him to shoot Merrigan), but he gives his position away when he makes a noise while reorganizing figurines on the shelf.
In Season 6's "Mr. Monk and the Buried Treasure" (S06E06), "Happy" Jack Connolly pistol-whips his brother with what appears to be a two-tone Vektor CP1 during a flashback.
Revolvers
Ruger Blackhawk
In "Mr. Monk Goes to the Circus" (S02E04), Natasia Lovara (Lolita Davidovich; stunt double Shauna Diggins) kills her ex-husband with a single shot from a revolver described as a "Ruger Casull" in .454 caliber from 30 feet away. The resulting slug actually goes right through the victim and lodges itself in a planter box behind him. The weapon the ninja holds appears to be a Ruger Blackhawk revolver, however, the Blackhawk does not come in a model that chambers the .454 Casull cartridge, as the Ruger Super Redhawk does.
Smith & Wesson Model 10
In the Season Five premiere, "Mr. Monk and the Actor" (S05E01), Jack Leverett (Greg Grunberg) kills a pawn shop owner with his own weapon, which is a bright, nickel-plated snub-nosed Smith & Wesson Model 10 with a square butt and pearl grips. Disher describes it later as a "Smith & Wesson 38 with a pearl handle".
Smith & Wesson Model 19
David Ruskin (Stanley Tucci), an actor who has immersed himself in playing Monk in a role, pulls a S&W Model 19 on Leverett during a standoff in Season 5's "Mr. Monk and the Actor".
Trivia: Tucci was one of the three final choices (along with Tony Shalhoub and Alfred Molina, who guest-starred in a season 6 episode) for the part of Monk.
Smith & Wesson Model 36
In the season 6 episode "Mr. Monk and the Daredevil," Joey Krenshaw (David Koechner) uses a Smith & Wesson Model 36 to force his cousin Harold to the edge of a hospital roof at gunpoint, but drops it when Natalie attacks him with a metal pipe. As Monk and Natalie try to subdue Joey, the gun gets kicked away.
In the Season 6 episode "Mr. Monk and the Man Who Shot Santa Claus" (S06E10), Monk picks up a pearl-handled Smith & Wesson Model 36 dropped by a suspect and uses it to shoot the criminal dressed as Santa Claus.
Smith & Wesson Model 66
In "Mr. Monk and the Other Detective," (S04E01) Vic Blanchard (Rossif Sutherland) uses what appears to be a Smith & Wesson Model 66 revolver to shoot and kill a security guard who has stumbled in on the robbery that Blanchard and his partner Eddie Dial (Reynaldo Gallegos) are committing, and whom has drawn a Glock 17 on them. After killing the guard, Blanchard executes the store manager they were blackmailing, since the manager has now seen Blanchard's face.
Submachine Guns
Heckler & Koch MP5A2
The Heckler & Koch MP5A2 is one of the rifles used by SFPD SWAT officers in the series.
Heckler & Koch MP5A3
The Heckler & Koch MP5A3 is used by SFPD SWAT officers, fitted with Navy trigger groups, Surefire dedicated forend weaponlights, and an unknown scope. The SWAT teams appear in several episodes, including "Mr. Monk and the Candidate, Part II" (S01E02) and Season Three's "Mr. Monk and the Kid" (S03E16). In "Mr. Monk's 100th Case" (S07E07), the H&K MP5A3 is seen being utilized by SWAT officers during a raid on a photography studio and later on a motel room.
Ingram MAC-10
In the Season Three episode "Mr. Monk Meets the Godfather" (S03E05) a crew of mafia hoods from the Lucarelli crime family are gunned down at a barber shop with one of their own MAC-10s.
Rifles and carbines
Blaser 93 Sniper Rifle
A Blaser 93 sniper rifle is used by an Asian hitman in Season 3's "Mr. Monk Gets Cabin Fever".
M4A1
Numerous police and SWAT officers use various M4 variants. An SFPD officer holds one in Episode 6.13, "Mr. Monk and the Three Julies."
.
Norinco Type 56-1
In the Season Three episode "Mr. Monk and the Election" (S03E15) illegal arms dealer Jack Whitman (Nick Offerman) tries to disrupt Natalie's campaign headquarters by shooting up the office with a Norinco Type 56-1. From Monk's statement, Stottlemeyer determines that they are looking for a rapidfire semiautomatic. It is later revealed that he was actually trying to shoot out a copier machine with an incriminating document containing his client's names and the weapons being sold to them.
The AKM is also seen in the hands of an East Asian drug cartel member in the Season Seven episode "Mr. Monk and the Magician" (S07E15).
Ruger Model 77
In Season 3's "Mr. Monk and the Employee of the Month" (S03E07), Monk grabs a Ruger Model 77 (identifiable from the paddle stock, and the built-in strap ring on the forestock, both of which are visible for a second) from the sporting goods section of the "Mega-Mart" and tosses it to his ex-partner, Joe Christie (Enrico Colantoni), who uses it to shoot out the tire of a bank robber gang's getaway van.
In Season 7's "Mr. Monk Takes A Punch" (S07E04), professional killer Charles Bach, or "The Iceman" (Jon Sklaroff) prepares a takedown and probably customized version of this rifle equipped with a bipod in his attempt to assassinate boxer Ray Regis (James Lesure) during a title bout. The inserts on the pistol grip section of the stock are the same as the Ruger M77 "paddlestock." Then again, the Iceman is a professional assassin, so it is not hard to consider that he might have custom built this rifle so that the police could not trace the weapon. It appears to be the same All-Weather Mark II rifle used in The Kill Point.
Remington 700PSS
SFPD SWAT snipers are seen using the Remington 700PSS sniper rifle, notably in Season 6, during "Mr. Monk Is on the Run, Part 1".
Ruger Mini-14
In the Season Seven episode "Mr. Monk's Other Brother" (S07E10) prison guard Daniel Reese (Titus Welliver) fires a semi-automatic Ruger Mini-14 from his rooftop at Adrian, Natalie and Jack Monk, Jr. (Steve Zahn), who returns fire with Monk's own "borrowed" pistol. During Jack's staged escape seen in flashback, Reese opens fire on Jack from the guard tower with what appears to be the same semiautomatic rifle. For a prison guard, he has very bad marksmanship because we see scenes of him firing on but missing targets twice during the episode.
Weatherby Mark V Fibermark
In the pilot episode, "Mr. Monk and the Candidate" (S01E01-02) hit man Ian Sykes (Shawn Reis) uses a bolt-action rifle identified later in the episode as a "Weatherby Fibermark" as his weapon of choice. It is incorrectly described as a British-made rifle, when in reality the Mark V line is American-made. Monk describes it as a hunting rifle that is popular with mercenaries and paramilitary groups for use as a sniper rifle.
Winchester Model 70
In the Season 2's "Mr. Monk and the Captain's Wife" (S02E14), Evan Coker (Daniel Goddard) guns down a tow truck driver with a single shot to the head from a long range position with Winchester Model 70 rifle, which is described by Disher as a "Winchester bolt-action rifle" in 30-.06 caliber.
Shotguns
Mossberg 500
The Mossberg 500 shotgun fitted with a Surefire tactical light is often seen carried by SFPD SWAT officers.
12 Gauge Over/Under Double Barreled Shotgun
In Season 5's "Mr. Monk Is At Your Service" (S05E12), Paul Buchanan (Sean Astin) tries to kill Natalie with an over/under 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun, though is distracted when Monk shows up with an identical shotgun taken from one of Paul's hunting friends, and Monk shoots down a quail with a single shot. Natalie then grabs the gun from Buchanan and she and Monk train both shotguns on Buchanan.
An unknown 12 Gauge shotgun is utilized as one of Bennie Wentworth's (Tom Bower) booby traps in "Mr. Monk Paints His Masterpiece" (S06E14).
Remington 870 Field Gun
In Season 6's "Mr. Monk and the Bad Girlfriend" (S6E04), Linda Fusco (Sharon Lawrence) shoots and kills her ex-business partner with a Remington 870 Field Gun. Later, when Monk and Natalie interview Linda at her office about the murder, Monk notices a photo of a younger Linda standing by her grandfather, apparently carrying the same kind of shotgun, which is what causes him to suspect Linda of the killing.
Other
Starter Pistol
Monk's assistant Sharona Fleming (Bitty Schram) uses a starter pistol in "Mr. Monk and the Candidate, Part II" (S01E02) to test a suspect's claim that he located a sniper by the sound of his shot.
RGD-5 Hand Grenade
In the Season Three episode "Mr. Monk and the Election" (S03E15), an arms dealer throws an RGD-5 hand grenade (erroneously described as being manufactured in Chechnya) through Natalie's window. In a rather comical scene, Monk slo-mo runs and tosses the grenade into the refrigerator... but then reopens the door and places it neatly in an empty compartment of an egg carton, before slamming the door and running away. Even in slow motion, the grenade takes a ridiculously long time to explode.
(N.B. This trick - using a refrigerator to contain the blast of a grenade - has been used on several other films and television shows, but was later tested and declared "busted" on an episode of MythBusters.)
