How the West Was Won
Kentucky Flintlock Rifle
Linus Rawlings (Jimmy Stewart), the beaver felt trader and "mountain man", carries a Kentucky Flintlock Rifle when he is seen riding his horse while among the Native Americans before meeting up with the Prescott family in present-day Ohio in 1839. Colin Harvey (Mark Allen) takes his father Alec's flintlock rifle when Linus first arrives at their camp. "Colonel" Jeb Hawkins' band of river pirates also carry flintlock rifles when they accost the Prescotts and Harveys. During the 1850s sequence, men riding in the wagon train west to California fire flintlock rifles at the attacking Cheyenne Indians. Some of the Indians seen during the 1860s railroad sequence also carry flintlock rifles, including one that fires at Zeb Rawlings.
Flintlock Pistol
Several of "Colonel" Jeb Hawkins' river pirates (including one played by Lee Van Cleef) use various types of Flintlock Pistols. Hawkins (Walter Brennan) himself also uses one.
unidentified revolver
Cleve Van Valen (Gregory Peck), a St. Louis gambler, tries to gamble during the wagon trip to California by betting a "fine London-made pistol". When the Cheyennes attack, Cleve sticks the revolver in his belt. However, when he draws it, it appears to be a much larger handgun (perhaps a Colt 1851 Navy based on the shape).
Springfield 1861
The Union soldiers during the Civil War battles seen between 1862 and 1865 carry Springfield 1861 rifles. Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard) has one as well, but it broke during an April 1862 battle, leaving only his bayonet as a useful combat weapon.
A young Confederate soldier, "The Reb" (Russ Tamblyn), shows Zeb a Colt 1851 Navy that he took from a dead officer and uses to try and shoot General Grant (Harry Morgan) and General Sherman (John Wayne). This is also possibly the revolver used by Cleve (Gregory Peck) to shoot a couple Cheyennes.
Henry 1860
Buffalo hunter Jethro Stuart (Henry Fonda) carries a Henry 1860 as his main weapon during the 1860s railroad sequence. Mike King (Richard Widmark) and Lt. Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard) also arm themselves with Henry rifles when the Indians attack the railroad with buffalo. An Indian who shoots at Zeb also carries a Henry rifle.
Remington 1858 New Army
Lt. Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard) carries a holstered Remington 1858 New Army revolver when the Army assigns him to watch the railroad in the late 1860s.
unidentified rifle
Several buffalo hunters that arrive by train, breaking Zeb's treaty with the Indians, carry rifles.
Sharps Rifle
One of the buffalo hunters getting off the train carries a Sharps Rifle.
double-barreled shotgun
While a town marshal in Arizona, Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard) fires a Double Barreled Shotgun at a gang of outlaws riding through his town.
Single Action Army
When Charlie Gant (Eli Wallach) joins his outlaw gang in Gold City, Arizona in 1889, he carries a Single Action Army with a 4.75" "Quickdraw" barrel. His gang members, including one played by Harry Dean Stanton, also carry Single Action Army revolvers. The Gold City town marshal Lou Ramsey (Lee J. Cobb) uses a Single Action Army, as does Marshal Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard).
Winchester Model 1873
Zeb Rawlings (George Peppard) takes a Winchester Model 1873 during the 1889 sequence when he leaves Gold City to pursue Gant's gang on the train. Town marshal Lou Ramsey (Lee J. Cobb) also carries one, using it as his primary weapon during the fight aboard the train, shooting the ropes holding up a generator to allow Zeb a clean shot at Gant. Some of Gant's outlaws also carry Winchesters.
