Basic
A helicopter circles above the Panamanian Jungle while a hurricane rages above. On board is a team of Army Ranger trainees, Kendall, Pike, Dunbar, Nuñez, Castro, Mueller, and their drill instructor, MSG Nathan West, (Giovanni Ribisi, Taye Diggs, Brian Van Holt, Roselyn Sanchez, Cristián de la Fuente, Dash Mihok, and Samuel L. Jackson, all on a weapons-only training mission. Hours later, Dunbar come running out of the jungle carrying a wounded Kendall on his shoulders. Before he gets on the evac helicopter, Mueller comes firing out of the trees and is gunned down by Dunbar. The base commander, Timothy Daly calls a favor to DEA agent and a former Ranger trained by West, Tom Hardy, (John Travolta) to find out what happened. He and the base’s MP commander, (Connie Nielsen), race to find out what happened before command takes over.
The following guns were used in the movie 'Basic:'
Colt 1911A1
Veteran Drill Instructor Master Sergeant West, (Samuel L. Jackson), carries a Colt M1911A1 in a black holster on his hip. He fires in into Nuñez, (Roselyn Sanchez), during a version of what happened.
Cobray Launcher
Every Ranger on the training mission have Cobray 37mm Launchers attached to their M4 rifles. Why they didn’t get M203s, We don’t know.
Colt M4A1
All of the Rangers carry M4A1s into the field for the operation. All of them have an ACOG sight attached to the carry handle and a M203 launcher. MSG West gets a hold of one after killing Pike (Taye Diggs), during a version of the operation. Hardy also has one hanging on his wall at his apartment, which is understandable, as he is in “Cocaine Central” and would need protection.
Beretta M9
The U.S. military’s standard sidearm, the Beretta 92FS is used by literally EVERY character in the movie. It is seen in the hands and holsters of Rangers, MPs, and everyone in-between.
Colt M16A2
The M16A2 carried by Castro and other Army personnel.
M18 Smoke Grenade
A yellow M18 Smoke Grenade is seen on Castro’s LBV.
White Phosphorous Grenade
Every Ranger carries a M34 White Phosphorus Grenade into the field and they are a major plot device to as who used one to possibly kill Sgt. West.
Inaccuracies
This movie, despite being awesome and having Samuel L. Jackson wearing a cape, it contains several major mistakes that the filming crew chose:
Wrong Patch
Master Sergeant Nathan West, (Samuel L. Jackson), a legendary Ranger Instructor wears the wrong patch for his current command. He should be wearing the TRADOC "Follow Me" patch and not the 193rd Infantry patch, which he is wearing. He also isn’t wearing the Airborne patch, which every ranger is required to earn before actually attending Ranger school.
Nunez
As hot as she may be, Roselyn Sanchez’s character Nunez really has no place being with a Ranger platoon. No Special Operations Force in the U.S. allows women, not even the Air Force. Sorry ladies, we don’t make the rules.
Berets
Jay Pike and Castro, (Taye Diggs) and (Cristián de la Fuente), both wear their berets into the training mission. Castro is wearing his maroon beret, which means he was a paratrooper before the Rangers and Pike’s looks to be a black one, which would normally mean he is already a Ranger, but barely makes it though the coarse. Strange. Anyway, both of them should not be wearing the berets because military law states that a beret is a maritime uniform item.
---Actually, the movie is from 2003, and in 2001, the Army made the black beret standard headgear for all soldier, day one, basic training. Rangers changed to tan, airborne still using maroon. They probably shouldn't have been wearing them in the field, since (to the best of my knowledge) they are garrison headgear. Still probably an error because the US military left Panama in 1999, but it would be more from researching Army uniforms at the time of filming than anything else.
Tiger Stripe
Despite how cool it looks, Mueller, (Dash Mihok), should not be wearing tiger stripe fatigues during the training. Woodland or nothing, buddy boy.
