Farquhar-Hill Rifle - .303 British

The Farquhar-Hill rifle was an early British semi-automatic rifle. It was designed by Colonel Moubray Gore Farquhar and gunsmith Henry Arthur Hill and first patented in 1908. The two refined their designs, and the model photographed to the right is the final, third model made in 1917. It was used briefly by British Aviators in World War I, and appears to have been adopted and ordered by the British Army in 1918. The end of World War I however resulted in the orders being canceled.

The Farquhar-Hill uses a 19-round drum magazine. It lacks feed lips, and instead had a switch that extends or retracts a catch at the top of the magazine, toggling the feeding on or off. Loading the magazine would have the catch being retracted so the rounds can be loaded then extended when complete. Feeding would be unlocked while the magazine is loaded into the rifle. Retracting the catch while the magazine is filled with rounds and outside of the gun (or pulling a filled magazine off the gun without closing the feeding first) will result in all the rounds in the magazine flying out. The bolt is released by pulling the trigger once, and pulling the trigger again after that will fire the weapon.

Some Farquhar-Hill rifles were converted into machine guns in the interwar years.
