About
J. P. Sauer & Sohn GmbH, commonly referred as simply Sauer, is a German firearms manufacturing company founded in 1751. It is the oldest firearm manufacturer still active in Germany. Founded by Lorenz Sauer in Suhl, Thuringia, the company was trademarked as J. P. Sauer & Sohn in 1840 by Johann Paul Sauer and his sons.
After World War II, Suhl came under Soviet occupation, and later became a part of East Germany; Sauer's machinery were nationalized and merged with several other manufacturers to form VEB Ernst Thälmann. In West Germany, Sauer's owners restarted Sauer under a new enterprise, founding a new company, J. P. Sauer & Sohn GmbH, in Eckernförde, with firearm manufacturing resuming soon after.
Sauer was for some time acquired by Kompressorenfabrik Wilhelm Poppe, and later merged with several other companies to form J. P. Sauer & Sohn Maschinenbau GmbH, which focused on mechanical engineering. In 1976, the arms maufacturing facilities of "Sauer Maschinenbau" were sold to Swiss firearm manufacturer SIG, forming the first iteration of SIG-Sauer, SIG-Sauer GmbH. SIG acquired Sauer as a part of its effort to expand into international markets, as Swiss laws prevented firearm exports, necessitating an international partnership.
SIG sold Sauer & Sohn and SIG-Sauer GmbH to Michael Lüke and Thomas Ortmeier in October 2000, and it is now a part of Lüke & Ortmeier Gruppe. Sauer currently still manufacturers hunting weapons.
