Hearts of the World

Hearts of the World (also known as Love's Struggle) is a 1918 American silent World War I propaganda film written, produced and directed by D. W. Griffith (The Birth of a Nation). The story begins just before the beginning of the First World War in a small French village known for its idyllic atmosphere. A girl who lives with her grandparents falls in love with an American boy living there. The two conspire. A few days before the wedding, soldiers are mobilized and the men go to war. The boy also feels obliged to fight for the country in which he lives.

Krag-Jørgensen M1896
During the parade French soldiers are seen with Krag-Jørgensen M1896 rifles standing in for Lebel 1886 rifles.
Mauser Model M1893
Some French soldiers during the same parade can be seen with Spanish Mauser M1893 rifles which are most likely leftovers from the Spanish-American War of 1898.
Beaumont-Vitali M1871/88
Dutch Beaumont-Vitali M1871/88 rifles are used by French, German, and American troops.
Mauser Gewehr 1898
German soldiers use correct Gewehr 98 rifles.
Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk. I
British soldiers are briefly seen with Lee-Enfield No.1 Mk.I rifles with rifle grenades.
Machine Guns
St. Étienne Mle. 1907
French soldiers can be seen briefly with a St. Étienne Mle 1907 machine gun.
Lewis Gun
A Lewis Gun is seen operated by British soldiers.
Vickers Mk. I
The Vickers machine gun is also used by British soldiers.
Maxim MG 08
German troops can be seen with Maxim MG08 machine guns which appear to be mock-ups.
Handgrenades
Mills Bomb
Mills Bombs are seen as British soldiers prepare rifle grenades.
Model 15 Stielhandgranate
German soldiers use Model 15 Stielhandgranates which are probably mockups. The Little Disturber (Dorothy Gish) uses this grenade at the end.
Unknown Grenade
French soldiers including the Boy can be seen with unknown grenades.

9.2 inch Mark I Siege Howitzer
The 9.2 inch Mark I Siege Howitzer is briefly seen during the final charge of the village.
