Chauchat-Ribeyrolles 1918 submachine gun
The Chauchat-Ribeyrolles 1918 submachine gun refers to two prototype French Firing Port Weapons developed during late World War I by the same designers behind the Chauchat, intended for use on the Renault FT 17. The action of the weapon is based on the R.S.C. Mle 1917 semiautomatic rifle. The first model used a special eight-round Mannlicher-Berthier clip, while the second model used modified Chauchat magazines. Despite being named "Submachine Gun", they fired the 8x50mmR rifle rounds. These weapons were eventually retired due to the recoil from the rifle rounds being too heavy.
A note on the name: while the English term "Submachine Gun" was coined in 1921, and is by definition applied to pistol caliber instead of rifle caliber weapons, the French name applied to these weapons, pistolet-mitrailleur, would come to mean Submachine Gun in the modern day.
