Fallout 2: A Post-Nuclear Role-Playing Game
Fallout 2 is the sequel of the critically acclaimed turn based role-playing game Fallout. It was developed by Black Isle Studios, the creators of the original game and published by Interplay in 1998. This sequel featured slightly more weapons than its predecessor and also included weapon upgrades/mods, which have later returned in Fallout: New Vegas.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Almost every weapon in the game can fire in burst mode. In the Fallout Universe, "burst" means that the characters fire short, controlled bursts and not that the actual weapon is capable of firing bursts!
The following weapons make an appearance in the video game Fallout 2:
Handguns
Mauser C96
The Mauser C96 appears as "9mm Mauser" in the game. It holds 7 rounds instead of 10-round capacity and the player's character cannot be ordered to fire it in short bursts.
In-game description: A Mauser M/96 in 9x19mm Parabellum. In excellent condition. Extremely accurate.
Smith & Wesson Model 29
The Smith & Wesson Model 29 with 4" barrel appears as ".44 Magnum Revolver" in the game. It is one of the most powerful one handed weapons, but holds only 6 rounds. It can fire .44 Magnum JHP and .44 Magnum FMJ rounds. It can be upgraded with a speedloader for increased reload speed. Its in-game description contains an unmistakable reference:
In-game description: Being that this is the most powerful handgun in the world, and can blow your head clean-off, you've got to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?
Colt M1911A1
A nickel plated M1911A1 with brown grips can be seen on the cover of the "Guns and Bullets" magazine but it does not appear as a usable weapon in this Fallout (only in Fallout Tactics).
IMI/Magnum Research Desert Eagle Mark VII
(Technically it is a Mark VII / Mark XIX hybrid, because the model has scope rails but lacks the fluted barrel.) The Desert Eagle Mark VII holds 8 rounds and cannot be fired in short bursts. Can be upgraded with extended magazines to boost up the capacity to 20 bullets.
In-game description: An ancient Desert Eagle pistol, in .44 magnum. Interest in late 20th century films made this one of the most popular handguns of all times.
Submachine Guns
M3A1 "Grease Gun"
The M3A1 "Grease Gun" appears with a 30-round capacity and fires ".45 Caliber" rounds. Can be fired in single shot or 8-round burst modes.
In-game description: This submachine gun filled National Guard arsenals after the Army replaced it with newer weapons. However, the "Grease Gun" was simple and cheap to manufacture so there are still quite a few still in use.
Thompson M1928
The Thompson M1928 is called by it's nickname "Tommy Gun" in the game. Fires ".45 Caliber" rounds from a 50-round drum. It can be fired in 10-round bursts or one shot at a time.
In-game description: This Thompson M1928 submachine gun is a sinister looking weapon; every time you hold it, you have an urge to put on a fedora hat and crack your knuckles. The Thompson is well-fed by a large 50 round drum magazine.
FN P90
The FN P90 appears as the "H&K P90c". Two P90 exist in the Fallout universe and this one is manufactured by Heckler & Koch (the other P90, the FN P90 actually appeared in Fallout Tactics). It holds 24 bullets and fires 10mm rounds. When the burst attack mode is selected, it sends a devastating tsunami of 12 rounds at its target. It also uses -1 PA contrary to other weapons for firing it.
In-game description: The Heckler & Koch P90c was just coming into use at the time of the war. The weapon's bullpup layout, and compact design, make it easy to control. The durable P90c is prized for its reliability, and high firepower in a ruggedly-compact package.
Rifles
Heckler & Koch G11 K2
Fallout 2 was one of the first video games to feature Heckler & Koch's futuristic looking assault rifle, the G11. Two versions are available: The "H&K G11" is the default with 50-round capacity and 5-round burst mode. The "H&K G11E" is the more advanced version with an extended barrel and upgraded scope. It also uses 50-round magazines and fires 8 rounds when the burst attack mode is selected.
In-game description: This gun revolutionized assault weapon design. The weapon fires a caseless cartridge consisting of a block of propellant with a bullet buried inside. The resultant weight and space savings allow this weapon to have a very high magazine capacity.
FN FAL "G Series"
The FN FAL "G Series" is one of the most powerful weapons in the game, however it has some drawbacks; it fires the "7.62mm" rounds, which are one of the rarest ammunition types in the game and also holds only 20 rounds. The "FN FAL" is the factory version which fires in 10-round bursts. It can be upgraded with a night-vision scope to negate the aiming penalties at night or in caves. The "FN FAL HPFA" (High Power Full Automatic) fires in 20-round bursts, ergo empties the whole magazine is one turn and has a better firepower.
In-game description: This rifle has been more widely used by armed forces than any other rifle in history. It's a reliable assault weapon for any terrain or tactical situation.
Enfield XL70E3
In the Fallout Universe, the Enfield XL70E3 is an advanced assault rifle developed in the late 22nd century just before the Great War. It fires "5mm" rounds from a 20-round box magazine.
In-game description: This was an experimental weapon at the time of the war. Manufactured, primarily, from high-strength polymers, the weapon is almost indestructible. It's light, fast firing, accurate, and can be broken down without the use of any tools.
Shotguns
Heckler & Koch CAWS
The Heckler & Koch CAWS holds 10 shells and appears as "HK CAWS" in the game. This is the most common combat shotgun, used by various NPC's.
In-game description: The CAWS, short for Close Assault Weapons System, shotgun is a useful tool for close-range combat. The bullpup layout gives the weapon a short, easily handleable length while still retaining enough barrel length for its high velocity shells.
Pancor Jackhammer
The Pancor Jackhammer is a usable combat shotgun with a 10-shell capacity and decent damage. The characters can be ordered to fire a single shell, or five shells at a time.
In-game description: The Jackhammer, despite its name, is an easy to control shotgun even when fired on full automatic. The popular bullpup design, which places the magazine behind the trigger, makes the weapon well balanced and easy to control.
Sawed-off double-barreled shotguns
The game features two different sawed-off SxS shotguns: One being the "Winchester Widowmaker", other the "Scattergun" Both have roughly the same stats and fire 12 gauge shells.
Sniper Rifles
Barrett M82A1
In Fallout 2, the Barrett M82A1 anti-material sniper rifle has been converted to a heavy support weapon called the "Bozar" with a scope and firing ".223 FMJ" bullets. It has a 30-round magazine and can be fired in 15-round bursts only. The model features a wooden pistol grip and a modified handguard.
In-game description: The ultimate refinement of the sniper's art. Although, somewhat finicky and prone to jamming if not kept scrupulously clean, the big weapon's accuracy more than makes up for its extra maintenance requirements.
Machine Guns
M60
The M60 machine gun appears with a 50-round capacity. It has no sights and the buttstock and grip have been replace with wooden parts. This weapon can only be fired in 10-round bursts.
In-game description: This relatively light machine gun was prized by militaries around for world for its high rate of fire. This reliable, battlefield-proven design, was used on vehicles and for squad level fire-support.
Enfield L86A1 LSW
The Enfield L86A1 appears as "Light Support Weapon" in the game and is listed as a "Big Gun". It has a longer barrel and a non-removable SUSAT scope. Holds 30-rounds and can only be fired in 10-round bursts.
In-game description: This squad-level support weapon has a bullpup design. The bullpup design makes it difficult to use while lying down. Because of this it was remanded to National Guard units. It, however, earned a reputation as a reliable weapon that packs a lot of punch for its size.
Fictional Weapons
Fallout games are popular for featuring an enjoyable mix of real-life and fictional weapons. Here is the list of the fictional weapons:
- The Colt 6520 is a 10mm semi-automatic pistol manufactured by Colt. Has a 12-round magazine. Another of their products is the Colt Rangemaster, a .223 hunting rifle.
- The 14mm Pistol is a high-power handgun made by SIG-Sauer (appears as "Sig-Sauer").
- Heckler & Koch is the manufacturer of the devastating MP9, a 10mm submachine gun and the descendant of the MP5.
- The AK-112 is a new variant of the AK-47 firing 5mm rounds from a 24-round box magazine, eventually considered aged and was scheduled to be replaced just prior to the Great War.
- Two powerful shotguns appear in the game made by Winchester. The City-Killer is a bullpup combat shotgun with a 12-round capacity. The Widowmaker is a sawed-off double-barreled shotgun. Winchester is also the designer and manufacturer of the P94 Plasma Rifle.
- The Glock 86 Plasma Pistol is made by Glock, and especially by Gaston Glock. His consciousness was somehow transferred into an advanced artificial intelligence and in this new form before the Great War, Gaston Glock continued to design weapons.
