Biggles: Adventures in Time (1986) aka "Biggles"

Lanchester Carbine

The sub-machine guns used by Biggles and companions in the First World War scenes is the (anachronistic) Lanchester Machine Carbine. This weapon, a copy of the Bergmann MP-18/MP-28, was produced in small numbers during the early part of World War II in Britain but was rapidly replaced by the far cheaper STEN gun. The few thousand that were manufactured went to the Royal Navy and were still in service well into the 1960s.

In reality the only sub-machine gun used during the First World War was the Bergmann MP-18, with the odd "snail drum" magazine projecting from the left side; the Italian FIAT-Villar Perosa Mod 15 was used as a light machine gun, despite firing a pistol round.

Mauser Gewehr 1898

Mauser Gewehr 1898 rifles are used by the German soldiers. The Germans use mainly Mauser K98a rifles, which look like Polish WWII Mausers and were used by German "Stoßtruppen" (shock troops) during the trench warfare. Nevertheless there are some Mauser rifles that have the characteristic G98 rollercoaster sight, but they seem to have shortened barrels, perhaps modified models.

Lewis gun

A Lewis gun is used by Jim Ferguson back in 1917 on Biggles' two-seat photo-recon aircraft (actually a modified Belgian Stampe SV.4 rather than anything that would have flown with the Royal Flying Corps in 1917). A Lewis gun is also seen in the trenches on the Western Front. The aircraft mounted weapon is in fact the ground service model with standard shoulder stock, rather than the 'spade grip' and barrel shroud.
