The Hotchkiss M1909 (French: Hotchkiss Modèle 1909) machine gun was developed and built by Hotchkiss et Cie. and adopted in 1909 by the French army firing the 8 mm Lebel. It was also known as Hotchkiss Portative ("portable Hotchkiss") because of its lesser weight in comparison with heavy machine guns. This machine gun was also adopted in USA as the Benet-Mercie Machine Rifle, Caliber .30 U. S. Model of 1909 for .30-06 caliber.

The Hotchkiss Mk.I is a British variant of the French Hotchkiss M1909 machine gun. It was manufactured by Enfield and firing the .303 round. The gun was mostly used on armored vehicles in the early 20th century.
